What have you seen from Okoye or Anderson to make you take them before Adams?
Okoye would be a stretch at 6 overall. I'd love to have him, but only if we trade down to the early teens range of the draft. Another guy who I'm watching have a GREAT combine right now is Jarvis Moss out of Florida. Again, not worthy of the 6th pick, but another 1st rd talent at D-line. Gaines Adams BTW turned in the fastest times of all D-lineman at the combine today. If we don't trade that pick and he's available, he's a no brainer to me. So blazing fast around the corner, and coaches/GM's told him that he only needs to add 10-12lbs. That can be done in a month. Anderson worries me. He's in the 290-300lb range, and his speed off the corner has been questioned. And he decided not to work out this weekend at the combine despite standing to gain a ton by a solid performance. I do like Alan Branch. He wouldn't be a stretch for the 6th pick either. He's pure run stuffer at 6-6 330, and we are terrible against the run... |
Re: Gaines Adams: Dream Come True, being a REDSKIN
I have a question. If the Redskins trade down to say the 10 or 11th pick what can we get in return? I'm sure one fo these defensive players we like will be there around that pick.
Think San Fran has the 11th pick and they'd want D so they may want to move to 6th spot. If they go DE then Branch might be available at 11th for GW and get another pick too boot. |
Re: Gaines Adams: Dream Come True, being a REDSKIN
San Fran will still get a good defensive player at 11. Silly to give up everything they'd have to give up to get the 6th pick. Unfortunately, we don't have Joe Gibbs to trade down with.

Re: Gaines Adams: Dream Come True, being a REDSKIN
INDIANAPOLIS -- As the NFL Combine enters its final day, the top prospects from the defensive side of the ball took to the RCA Dome. There was plenty of buzz about some exciting performances while others were not as fortunate.
Risers Gaines Adams/DE/Clemson: Of all the defensive linemen who took to the field Monday morning, Adams stole the show. Running both 40s in the low 4.7-second range, Adams displayed his unlimited athleticism for scouts. Not only did Adams stand out during the defensive line drills, but he also looked great when running through a battery of linebacker drills. Adams presently ranks as the No. 1 defender in the draft. STOCK GOING UP. |
Re: Gaines Adams: Dream Come True, being a REDSKIN
Sliders
Alan Branch/DT/Michigan: Branch ran relatively well in the 40, clocking under 5.10-seconds after weighing in at 324 pounds. He looked sluggish and sloppy during the drilling portion of the workout leading many to believe he is in poor shape. STOCK GOING DOWN. |
Re: Gaines Adams: Dream Come True, being a REDSKIN
If anyone projected to go in the 1st round moves up or down more than 5 spots because of the Combine, then the scouts are dumber than I thought.
|
Re: Gaines Adams: Dream Come True, being a REDSKIN
Not sure about 5 spots ? However, I could easily see Branch going past #10 Anderson #7,8? Adams might go before we're up to the plate, 5th or better.

If Adams goes higher than 5, I'll be elated. That would mean that either Russell, Thomas, Johnson, or Peterson would be left when we pick. That means trade bait. |

That's an interesting comment because Dwayne Bowe who was projected to be a mid first round pick, now he might have fallen out of the first round. That's kind of insane to me. He shows up all season and then runs a mediocre 40 time and his play means very little. Whatever. |

Seriously, that's pretty lame if you ask me. The combine and sick fascinations with 40-times seems to explain why guys like Trung Canidate are picked in the 1st round. |

What part don't you understand? The scouts were there you weren't. Pretty clear what I'm talking about....... It will be a total suprise if Branch makes it inside the top 10. |
Re: Gaines Adams: Dream Come True, being a REDSKIN
I have a gut feeling that they need to stay away from Adams. I would rather sign Branch. Signing Branch would clog up the middle immediately and I think that Grif would have a huge year. Plus, the description of Branch is that he can play some D-end as well. Think about that. A bull rush from a 6-5 330 pounder!

I agree. I hate the fact that I'm falling for the Combine hype machine. Adams is getting rave reviews, Branch isn't. I have (had?) my heart set on Branch but, man, it looks like he has some sort of motivational issues. Maybe he's just a laid back kinda guy who knows when the time is right to put it all on the table. |

Re: Gaines Adams: Dream Come True, being a REDSKIN
I think that Joe Gibbs summed it up when he said that Redskins football is about running the ball and stopping the run.
In my opinion a 330 pound monster from the big 10 goes a long way towards stopping the run. Who would the offense double team? Griffin or Branch? Doubling one of them up frees up the ends and linebackers. If they can get Rocky coming from the edge, look out! |

He's not glamorous per se, but he can instantly make the "playmakers" excel. Everyone remembers Ray Lewis, but ask him and he'll tell you Adams and Siragusa were instrumental to his success, ask Singletary and he'll tell you Hampton, ask Mann and he'll tell you Butz and so on. Anyhow, you can chat with Alan Branch Wednesday at 1pm on ESPN.com |

I with you 100% on this one. I think Adams will probably be a good player, but if I had the choice, I'd pick Branch. I think Branch would probably free up guys like Griffin and Carter to do a lot of damage to opposing QBs, and would instantly improve our run defense. |

How many 330 lbs. are in good shape? Vince Wilfork is a total fat slob, but still gets the job done. I've unloaded deuces from my ass that looked prettier than Pat Williams or Sam Adams, but those boys (as in Williams and Adams) have been effective for years. It's simply crazy for teams to place a lot of stock in the combine. If a good combine=a good player, Robert McCune would be an All-Pro by now. |
Re: Gaines Adams: Dream Come True, being a REDSKIN
It's not just the combine stock issue. Branch is a good heavy DT. On the other hand both Anderson in the 275 range, Adams in the 258 range for DE's have MUCH BETTER stats in college. Almost identical, you can't over look the numbers.
You certainly never know how any of these guys are going to turn out in the long run. However, you can't deny the stats up to this point in their young careers. |

I've been saying all along that if Mitchell showed true big-league speed at the combine or during an individual workout, he will elevate significantly from the later portion of Round 1. B-Mitch was talking about the combine today. There are combine prep schools now that train the players on how to get the best numbers. At the end of the day what really matters is how they perform against elite competition, not how many times they benched 225 or how fast they ran a 40. Btw, all accounts are that Calvin Johnson is an absolute freak of nature. He has the best hands, jumps the highest and runs in the 4.3's at over 230 pounds. Last but not least, no one could stop him last year. Whoever gets him is going to be lighting cigars on draft day. |

Particularly when you are talking about space-eaters like Branch. Branch isn't the kind of player who is going to get 5 tackles and a sack every game. He's the kind of guy who keeps Olinement off of LBs and lets OTHER guys get the stats. |

A defensive tackle's stats should NOT be comparable to a DE's...If that's true, why don't we compare a corner's to a Safety's...they both play in the secondary

Re: Gaines Adams: Dream Come True, being a REDSKIN
I may have missed this, but with Adams, Williams would have another guy that he could be versitle with. He could blitz off the corners and drop Adams into coverage on a TE or RB. Knowing Williams fondness for athleticism, I wouldn't be suprised if he has devised a cunning plan to see if Adams is truely a savage beast. A freak that will fit his system.
I hope he isn't overthinking it. |
