Brunell in all likelihood be the backup this year.

I'm actually kinda interested to see how Brunell looks this preseason.
Me too. I haven't heard a thing about him this offseason; did he/does he have any lingering injuries, what are his feelings on PR being the starter, etc...

This Campbell kid is an interesting cat. Because of the success of African-American QBs like McNabb, Culpepper, Vick et al in the passing game (maybe not Vick yet) he won't be dogged with questions about him being a scrambling QB who occassionally passes which can only bode well for his attitude and confidence. As for comparisons size wise btw himself and Culpepper thats wholly unrealistic. Daunte looks like a d tackle.

I just want to see Campbell in for mop up duty after Portis has run for 200+ yards and our receivers have caught a couple touchdown passes.

Amen. It would be interesting to see how much of Brunell's crappy play was attributable the players around him last year. He had to play with guys who had no idea what was going on.

Then again, there's no excuse for his 1-8 performance against the Bengals (that was the Bengals game, right?). I remember Ramsey coming in and playing much better that day.

But the point remains, Brunell probably wouldn't be nearly as bad this year as he was last year. That said, I'd still prefer PR of course. But I don't mind having Mark Brunell as my backup QB, not one bit.
Campbell is actually an inch taller at 6-5, but Culpepper outweighs him by a good 35 pounds
Yeah it's the weight that makes the difference. Duante can run LBs over at the goalline when he wants to. Campbell would have to run around them.

Agree with all your points here...but what really concerns me is this. If we release Rod Gardner, then which wide receiver will throw the touchdown passes on our trick plays? If Gardner could do nothing else, it was throw ducks into the end zone

Campbell is no slouch at 228 pounds. I'm sure he could put a shoulder into a DB if he had to.

Re: campbell is culpepper clone?

We will see alot of Campbell in the scrimages and preseason. Should be interesting because Campbell ran the same offensive terminology and system in his senior year at Aubrun that Gibbs will run this year. He excelled in this offense and it has to speed up his development. I think that is part of the reason Gibbs liked what he saw in Campbell.
There should be less of a learning curve for Campbell than tere was for ramsey his rookie year. Ramsey had to learn a new offense while Campbell does not. I believe Ramsey played in the shotgun offense most of the time on Tulane.

I don't think it's fair to compare Campbell and Culpepper. Campbell isn't as mobile as Culpepper is he? and also he doesn't have Randy Moss to throw to.

Neither does Culpepper, Moss is a Raider.

Re: campbell is culpepper clone?

whoa, whoa, Culpeper is 268 lbs (yeah i know, like Charles Mann taking snaps). if Matty says Campbell is 228, then 40 lbs (on a freaking QB) makes a big difference in mobility, poise and how he'll be played.

Re: campbell is culpepper clone?

players are just getting bigger and bigger. Our kicker is 6'3", 240, and our punter is 6'5", 225.

i wouldn't start the whole comparing thing just yet, because if patrick ramsey has a breakout season this year, what are we gonna do with campbell? if the skins trade him, i'd be pissed, because he would probably go be a superstar somewhere else.

Keep them both. They'll both be under contract next year for relatively low cost against the cap.

The Chargers have Brees and Rivers again this year. They'll eventually have to get rid of one, but until then, it's not a bad situation at all.

Besides, if Ramsey has that kind of season, that would mean we'll probably go to the playoffs this year. So whatever problems we face in the following offseason, I'll gladly take them and deal with them later. I just want to see some wins.

None of it means jack.. Culpepper has won what???
Campbell hasn't even taken a snap! It's like saying "what if the Nazis won"...it's way too hypothetical.

Re: campbell is culpepper clone?

I'd rather J.C. develop into a great QB and become the 1st Jason Campbell and have other qb's compared to him.
