Re: Gibbs To Meet With Gardner Today
I think holding on to Gardner this season could work, but I have a couple concerns:
a. I'd still like to see McCants get a shot as the big posession WR. Yeah, he's not as fast as Rod, but he can catch the ball, especially in clutch situations. b. Don't forget about the $2 million in cap relief that comes with trading or releasing him. They'll need that room to sign rookies and have a little room for preseason/midseason injury replacements. Someone will need to go...maybe June 1 cuts? |
Re: Gibbs To Meet With Gardner Today
the skins got the highest rated qb in the draft, according to draft experts.ramsey's a$$ is on the line this season.if he plays like he has the last 3 years,he's not gonna be a redskin next year.i think gibbs know's what he's doing, the man has won 3 superbowls with some very medicore qbs who exceled in his system.
You made a very good point there BRS, Gibbs did win 3 SB's with 2 medicre QB's Joey T. was a good one, but nonetheless Schroeder, Williams, Rypien, Humphries where not great you could argue that before Gibbs got a hold of them they weren't even good QB's, and to maybe compare Campbell in that light is also a very fair comparison I am on board with that, and here's the BUT, Rypien and Humphries were both 6th rd picks, Williams cost us a 5th via trade, Schroeder was the highest pick in the 3rd rd in 84', Campbell was at best a late 2 or a third rd pick before someone would take a chance on him, that's where my problem lies with this pick. |
Re: Gibbs To Meet With Gardner Today
maybe that is why we didn't draft a wide reciever. ?
He will be productive if he is on the team and if not just plug in the infinite number 3s we have on this team. He will do better, contract year, and he now knows no one is ready to give up jack for him and knows he better have a good season next year or he may out of a starting job on any team |
Re: Gibbs To Meet With Gardner Today
Hopefully if Gardner DOES come back, he'll play better. I mean he has no excuse now...contract year, and he already knows the system. If he came back, there is no reason why he shouldn't be able to gain over 1000 yds receiving. (IMO)
That being said, I wouldn't get my hopes up with Gardner. After all, his nickname is 50/50. |
Re: Gibbs To Meet With Gardner Today
I'm sure that Gibbs will tell Gardner that he needs to be more reliable out there on the field. That isn't likely to change much. I can tell my pet cat that he needs to learn to solve differential equations but that isn't gonna make it happen.
Gardner will play better this year than last because I think he now sees what his value is around the league. If he doesn't have a much better year now, he will not be fielding calls during next year's free agency, he'll be faxing out his resume to teams. Here is something the coaching staff needs to focus on. They need to be sure that anyone going to Rod Gardner's birthday party this year takes a cab... |
Re: Gibbs To Meet With Gardner Today
Go Gardner Go ... errm i think ..
The problem I have with bringing him back is he with Coles were becoming baaad influences on the offence . If we strugle again on offence he could be poison . |
Re: Gibbs To Meet With Gardner Today
For his sake, Rod had better hope Gibbs lets him have this season, but I think Gardner getting cut is more likely to happen.
|
Re: Gibbs To Meet With Gardner Today
still try to trade him. package him with hasselback and trade them both to a team for whatever that team will give, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th round pick next year. whatever they will give. if nobody will give anything then just cut him. the skins could use that extra 2 mil.
|
Re: Gibbs To Meet With Gardner Today
Personally I'd like to keep him. I have a strange feeling that a financially motivated Gardner might actually start catching the ball.
Just not sure if we can afford the extra $2M. |
Re: Gibbs To Meet With Gardner Today
I know Im a huge minority, but I like Gardner. He's the type of receiver that gets better the more touches he gets!
|
Re: Gibbs To Meet With Gardner Today
For once I agree with you, Daseal. I wish people would remember how many passes LC dropped this last year. Probably a higher percentage than Gardner. Everyone wants a Holt, Moss or Harrison on their team. It would have been nice to draft Mike Williams, but IMO he was not a good fit for our system. We have ENOUGH WR's...let guys like Jacobs get out there and play! Not only that, but he (Williams) will probably end up wanting to be the highest paid reciever in league history in another 2 years.
|
Re: Gibbs To Meet With Gardner Today
I really don't think Coles had THAT many drops. Not only that, don't forget he had 90 catches. I will say that I think Gardner CAN be a good part of this offense and I definitely agree with Daseal, if you get more balls, you'll have a higher percentage of catches (hopefully).

Re: Gibbs To Meet With Gardner Today
Better the more touches he gets??
Then why is he still basically the same WR he was as a rookie? I'm not a fan of RG, he's not horrible and we certainly could do alot worse, but he's nothing to write home about that's for sure. |
Re: Gibbs To Meet With Gardner Today
I'm not saying he is an all-star by any means. I just think that if he is here, that he is fully capable of being a good possession receiver for us. Personally, I'd like to see McCants, but I something just seems to keep him out of the line-up.
|
Re: Gibbs To Meet With Gardner Today
And I think what Daseal and I mean by better is that, the more the ball is thrown to him and the more opportunities he has to make plays, the better receiver he is.
We're not saying that everytime he gets a ball, his overall skill level permanently increases. I mean there is definitely no fact to this opinion at all, it just seemed in his seasons before this last one, when he was thrown the ball more often, he didn't have as many drops and made some pretty good plays. |
