And I guess we're talking retired coaches here. Because if Belichick wins it all again this year...
No one will ever do it with 3 QB's and RB's ever again. Knoll, Belicheck, Johnson, and Landry all won it with the same QB's. Parcells won with two different QB's and two different starting RB's but thats about as close as anyone will get. Though I must admit if Parcells hadn't jumped around so much trying to rebuild every cellar dweller he could get his hands on he easily could have been the undisputed greatest head coach ever.
I agree with most of what you said. But how can you be sure the Pats won't win it this year?
I know they look unbeatable right now, just watch.

I think it's hard to compare different coaches from different eras. But I think Joe Gibbs and Bill Walsh were the greatest during their time; before free agency took it's hold on the league. I tellya, watching the Hogs and those teams was a thing of beauty. If a team beat the Skins back then it was beause they were stocked with talent and extremely well coached. Oh, and RFK was one of the most feared places to play in the NFL. We knew that if there was a playoff game at RFK, it was pretty much a wrap. Gibbs would have players practicing in the cold weather, rain, sleet, snow...or whatever. When you think abou it, it's crazy how they pamper these guys today. Totally different league now.

Someone look up Gibbs' playoff record at RFK. I'm betting his winning percentage was somewhere in the high 700s percentile.

I think when it's all said and done though, Belichick will go down as one of the greatest.

Joe Gibbs is the greatest coach/human being in any profession ever.

Certainly becomes more understandable when you see how old school football results in guys that can't even go to the bathroom themselves or in some cases remember the names of their kids. I've seen guys that were career backups with obvious physical ailments weather it be a limp or the inability to keep their back straight. This game as much as we love it really does come with a high price for many who play it.

I think Belichick is an absolutely amazing coach. Best of this era without question.

Even though he was probably tough on all of them, I think there was still some preferential treatment to stars. After all, CP did have some "power" while Gibbs was here(refusing to play in preseason games) but he has been completely submissive under Shanahan.

Agree, Gibbs 1 was very good, definitely top 5. One coach always overlooked in these discussions is Chuck Noll, he was 4 for 4 in his super bowls and his teams dominated the 70s. I think its hard not to have Noll in the top 3.

Sure Gibbs II was not anywhere near any "greatest" category, but when you look at this team now w/another proven winner running the show, it's clear to me that Gibbs II had a difficult task before him. Like Shan, he took over after a failed experiment. He righted the ship in terms of getting the players to play hard, though he couldn't change the front office culture.

Looking back, I appreciate Gibbs II even more these days. He gave us the best 2 seasons we've had in a decade.

X 2. However having a QB that can throw the ball like Brady doesn't hurt. But no question Hoodie is a great coach.

I'd also mention Tom Landry in there. He was an innovator and he was one of the few coaches who called both the offense and the defense. Great football coach and a great football mind.

Agree. Gibbs is even on record as saying Landry was the best coach he ever faced.
