Re: The official 2008 draft discussion thread
Alright, a majority of you people who said... EWW I retract my previous statement.
Chris Cooley - HBack/TE Fred Davis - TE/FB Gotta have two good TE's at WCO. No doubt. He was an integral part of the Trojans. Reminds me of Cooley a little, with his size I mean. Not a bad pick, would've waited till' the next pick if he was still available, and gone after Campbell, but maybe it'll end up like that, just reversed. |
Re: The official 2008 draft discussion thread
I had a feeling Jackson was headed to Philly.
|
Re: The official 2008 draft discussion thread
Wow...I don't get that pick at all. Why TE? Unless Zorn doesn't like Cooley for some reason.
How could anyone not like Cooley. |
Re: The official 2008 draft discussion thread
To be rather honest, I don't like this selection of Fred Davis. We have other needs, we were pretty set at TE with Cooley and Yoder. Unless this coaching staff plans on moving him to fullback, or making him bulk up to see o-line I don't really see how Davis can contribute to this team.
|
Re: The official 2008 draft discussion thread
great now we cant kick to DeSean Jackson LOL
|
Re: The official 2008 draft discussion thread
If I didn't watch Fred Davis play for four years, I would be confused like all of you guys. He's 6'4, 245... he caught everything for SC this season with a bunch of frosh wideouts. He blocks like nobody's business.
I was thinking the Seahawks would have grabbed him in the first instead of the Purdue guy... but Zorn knew what was up. Trust me, they can use both BFD and Cooley in this offense. We're helping Cambell out immediately with this pick. Best player available. |
Re: The official 2008 draft discussion thread
now lets get campbell
|
Re: The official 2008 draft discussion thread
1. Fred Davis, Southern California
Height: 6-3 Weight: 255 College stats: 26 starts, 117 receptions, 13 TDs Vital numbers: 4.65 40-yard dash Davis was the premiere tight end during the season, and looked like a complete player at the Senior Bowl. A former wide receiver who lived in the weight room until he was able to get 33 reps on the bench press test. His 40-yard times disappointed clubs, who expected a high 4.5 from him. Some teams believe he really is a 4.7-type athlete and that scares teams when it comes to presenting a vertical threat down the field, which has become a primary condition for a great draft grade. His game tapes indicate he can present a deep threat. Davis is a very solid route runner with fine body control near the sideline or reaching back for a bad pass over the middle. Davis should perform in pro football like L.J. Smith or Chris Cooley. Draft projection: Round 2. |
Re: The official 2008 draft discussion thread
Are we planning on going two TE's this year? Or is Cooley moving back to H-back? SS, what were those off the field issues you alluded to earlier regarding Campbell? Gotta wonder what the heck is up with this pick.
I don't know what the issues are, just heard rumors there were some. Still wouldn't be surprised or upset if he's our next pick. But man who knows now |
Re: The official 2008 draft discussion thread
we will really concentrate on our passing game. fred davis is a beast
But so is Chris Cooley. I don't get this pick at all. What's next? A punter? |
Re: The official 2008 draft discussion thread
Y'all are sleepin!
This guy is money... y'all just don't know it yet. Fight On Trojan Skins!
its supposed to be SKINSnCANES , not SKINSnCONDOMS, heh just kidding two TEs sets?!?!?1 our redzone threat!??! |
Re: The official 2008 draft discussion thread
As XXVI said, this is about west coast. Weapons for JC.
|
Re: The official 2008 draft discussion thread
If we don't go defense with #51, then I have lost all faith in Snyder/Cerrato/Zorn.
|
Re: The official 2008 draft discussion thread
QB? Don't they have like 5 QBs? I think CB makes sense for Tampa, I mean Ronde Barber is getting old.
Wow, once again the Eagles don't get a WR...who the hell are they going to throw at?
Thats the point they have QB's not sure how many but none are any good. Garcia is old as dirt, Simms is on a short leash and cant stay healthy to say the least. They need a QB they can build the team around or not as far as I'm concerned. I think most thought they where looking to pick the #1 wide out including myself...but probably not a bad pickup in the long term. |
Re: The official 2008 draft discussion thread
yes that was it two terrific TE plus devn will open up long ball to santana. I just hope that we find blockers tomorrow. now its calais time
|
Re: The official 2008 draft discussion thread
ummm... well we definitely shouldnt have any redzone problems now!
|
Re: The official 2008 draft discussion thread
Well we certainly have addressed the passing game... now let's get a OL or DL with this next pick
|

Re: The official 2008 draft discussion thread
yes!! lets get some D help!
|
Re: The official 2008 draft discussion thread
I hope Davis will be converted to FB. I'd much rather have him back there then Sellers.

Thank you, finally some recognition. |
Re: The official 2008 draft discussion thread
Campbell to Arizona
|
Re: The official 2008 draft discussion thread
TE wasn't a need. I thought Tyler Ecker was coming along well. I guess we couldn't have drafted another WR. This will have to grow on me.
|
Re: The official 2008 draft discussion thread
damn damn damn damn damn, why didnt we take campbell first!!!!! ugh!!!
|
Re: The official 2008 draft discussion thread
great our Dline is gone because we wanted value with a TE...duh
|
Re: The official 2008 draft discussion thread
there goes campbell

There's only one football on any given play. Blocking tight ends can be found anywhere, even in undrafted free agency. This was a bonehead pick given all the needs we have elsewhere. Strike one for Vinny. |

Might be a little premature. Cards just picked Campbell. I'd really like us to take Connor at ILB. Take over for Fletcher next year... |
Re: The official 2008 draft discussion thread
NFL Events: Draft Player Profiles - Fred Davis
Compares To: CHRIS COOLEY-Washington...As an H-back or playing the role of receiving tight end, teams will find Davis is quite successful at getting to the ball in the open. He lacks the "sand in his pants" along with bulk and strength to be a blow-up type of blocker and only gives marginal effort when blocking in-line, but he gets out in front on outside runs and while not physical, he will pester a second-level defender. He has the long reach and timing to get to the ball at its high point and has never had ball-security issues after the catch. Flex him out or keep him in motion and you will get very good production from Davis, especially when needing a bigger receiver to attack the deep secondary. |
Re: The official 2008 draft discussion thread
Well, Campbell it ain't.

All depends on how Zorn plans to use TEs in his offense. He obviously thinks Davis can play a significant role. |
Re: The official 2008 draft discussion thread
Quentin Groves - not what I had as ideal but he is very productive at the college level.
|
Re: The official 2008 draft discussion thread
we could go Justin King maybe if we go corner
|

Exactly. Do you all remember how many times we had to settle for 3 instead of being unable to either punch it in or get it to a reliable target inside the 10? BFD will represent! |
Re: The official 2008 draft discussion thread
I know the rule of thumb is take the best player available but it should be take the best player available unless the best player available plays the same position as the best player on your team.
I loved the Thomas pick but this one seems sort of stupid to me. I can see it already: "Campbell drops back to pass - Cooley, Davis, Randle El, Moss, and Thomas are all wide open! Oops - Campbell is sacked." Or how about "Campbell throws another touchdown pass - his fourth of the game! Now the Redskins are only down by 21 points!" |
Campbell to Arizona
Why not us? Marcus Harrison maybe at 51?

Yeah he was like the Antonio Gates of college...I was a little hesitate at first with the approach of the off season and free agency but i'm loving both picks so far |
Re: The official 2008 draft discussion thread
Malcom Kelly LOL really?????
|
Re: The official 2008 draft discussion thread
Ok, that scares me. Malcolm Kelly?
|
Re: The official 2008 draft discussion thread
Uh... Okay then...
