Re: Redskins vs. Steelers Preseason Pre-Game Thread
Shayne Graham really nullified that kicking competition today. I mean him and Gano are going in two completely opposite directions, which isn't a bad thing. Graham will probably be one of the first cuts. It's also the first time I can say I'm actually not concerned about going into a season with Gano as our starting kicker. Maybe that's just because S. Graham's problems really made Gano look even more impressive. And Aldrick Robinson may or may not be a PS candidate, but he definitely didn't help his case tonight.

Re: Redskins vs. Steelers Preseason Pre-Game Thread
Super Bowl. Kidding. Missed the game tonight and forgot to DVR. Nice stats though. Looks like we kicked some a**. I saw the first drive and missed the missed FG. Nice first game though.

Looks like the skins done everything against backups according to this article:
You guys are kidding right? Yeah Rex looked sharp, I'll give him that. That was the #1 thing I said I wanted to see tonight the Preseason week 1 expectations thread.
But come on. Their starters barely played. Our starting offense played the entire first half against Pitt's #2's with the exception of a series or two, and it was 7-7 tie at halftime. Not exactly bragging material.
I beg to differ. We played an established Super Bowl winning team in the Steelers. They have not been rebuilding their depth like we have. Our offensive line was much improved. Rex played really well. Most of the receivers showed good progress. Our RB corps appears to be a stable again instead of a barn. The front 7 look much improved with all of our new pick ups. Yes I will concede the secondary needs improvement, but I thought overall this team has looked a hell of a lot better in this first preseason game than in recent memory. I just think its reason to celebrate. At least we aren't going backwards for once. Sorry for being happy. I'll stop if it makes you feel better... |

Pittsburgh is a very stable team roster-wise and defending AFC Champs. They have no need to risk anyone in week 1 of the preseason. They don't even really have any major position battles going on either. Pretty much every starter from last year is back. |

Some people on here only saw him as a "3rd down back" and a backup to Torain. |

Hey don't get me wrong, I'm always happy to see the Redskins win, but all those things our starters did, let's not get ahead of ourselves and remember that we really couldn't manage more than a 7-7 tie with our 1's playing their 2's during most of the first half. I would hope our starters would look good playing backups. But I agree, it's nice to see some positive changes when compared to last year. I'm stoked about Hightower. Dude's a baller. |

Re: Redskins vs. Steelers Preseason Pre-Game Thread
I'd like to see our starters get more snaps than usual this pre-season. Seeing as how they lost every OTA and three weeks of camp I think every opportunity they have to get on the field and actually work with the systems in full pads is critical. Everyone else can do the typical light load for starters but I think the right move is to use them MORE. I'd love to see them play the whole half next week and deep into the second half after that. In the fourth I'd even give them a half.

Re: Redskins vs. Steelers Preseason Pre-Game Thread
As much as I would love to get hyped about how we play in preseason, I can't allow myself too. The preseason and the regular season are two completely different seasons. Even the speed of the game is different. With all that said, it's nice to see us not stink up the joint in our first preseason game, but again, this game means nothing. All it is is a informative teaching session for the coaches.

Did he prove the hatters wrong with his groin strain on the sidelines? Was it proved with yoga? pilates? P90X? |

But the problem is that he can't make the opponent do the same, and the evaluation becomes meaningless against non-competition. I wish all teams would go a half with their starters in the preseason, but some teams are more top-heavy than others.
For the first time, I don't think the Redskins qualify as top-heavy. The second team defense may have flat outplayed the first team, particularly in the defensive secondary. Hard for me to make that claim because the Steelers played their third team in the second half and their second team offense is actually quite good, but if for some week DHall, Wilson, Horton, and Doughty were all unavailable, I don't think we'd have much of a drop-off with the next four guys up. |
Re: Redskins vs. Steelers Preseason Pre-Game Thread
Last year, the year before that, and the year before that we looked mediocre against 1st, 2nd and 3rd stringers. Our first drive against the majority of the Steelers 1st team looked good and our defense looked okay. I take a good overall effort by the team any day over not being able to put up any points like KC did today against the Bucs.

I think he proved it by being in full uniform with his helmet on in the fourth quarter looking like he was ready to go even though he wasn't playing. His whole stance said "put me in coach, I'm ready to go." |

No need to risk injury to your top performers since they are assured of making the squad and retaining their starting roles. Preseason is to just get them back into the groove of things, get into playing condition, and evaluating those on the "talent bubble". |

Seriously though, there was talk in recent weeks about Brandon Banks being on the bubble. Do you think his performance tonight and his reserve's lack of one will earn him a roster spot? The local media made it seem like his spot was contingent upon him developing as a receiver but can't we just keep him because he is awesome at returning kicks?

I really have no idea. Who could it possibly be? I've checked all the archives and references and everything and I honestly can't remember any Redskins QB who played so awesome while wearing #12 that the number got unofficially retired. |
