This means that if Shanahan does come here, he will focus on coaching, and that makes me happy.
Of course, this also might mean that Shanahan will go to Dallas because he will have full control, including personnel. That also would make me happy. |

Jerry Reese is one of best young GM's out there, if they are blaming him for the Giants woes this year, then those people don't know squat. The Giants problems this year are due to major injuries, especially in the secondary and on the LB positions. |

How many times has someone here argued that we need to hire a real GM who then leads a coaching search? Step one complete. Danny is getting smarter. |

Hey don't shoot the messenger. I read it on ESPN Insider. Even though like many things posted there it's a stretch. For example they have a link to a reporter in Detroit suggesting that the Lions would do well to trade Megatron (Calvin Johnson). Of course the title for the entry says "Megatron on the block?" which to me suggest upon reading that the Lions are considering trading Calvin, but as it turns out it's nothing more then a hypothetical scenario posed by a beat writer. ESPN Insider has a lot of decent stuff in their rumor mill but at the same time some of the stuff is on par with PFT. |
Re: BREAKING NEWS: Cerrato resigns (Bruce Allen hired as VP/GM) - merged
Heard the news on Elliot in the Morning this morning and it caught me completely by suprise.
The first thing that popped into my head was an old saying that i'm about to butcher along the lines of, "once people get what they've wanted forever, sometimes they don't know what to do with it." What I mean by that is, now that we the fans have gotten what we've wanted for so long, how will we adjust if the Bruce Allen era doesn't go any better, or perhaps even worse, than Cerrato's tenure? Will Bruce Allen get a pass even if he doesn't work any better than Cerrato did, just because he might not've done anything as remotely stupid as Cerrato might've done? For me, here's to a long and successfull tenure of Bruce Allen/whatever coach he wants to hire. May he fare much better than his predecessor. |

I know, it really is premature to suggest that Jerry Reese would be on the outs . Especially with an organization as stable as New York. I mean for goodness sake they didn't even fire Coughlin when the fan base was calling for his head. Then again we can't always hope that Cerrato charms the New York Brass.
One more thing, until Gruden removes all doubt and releases a statement saying he's not interested, not in the running, and hasn't been contacted, he's a candidate in my opinion.
Gruden could end the speculation very easily. His silence speaks volumes.
Seems like Gruden hasn't removed any speculation about the chance of coming here.
Gruden commented on Allen's hiring today in a statement released by ESPN: "Bruce Allen is a great football mind and an even better person. His background and understanding of the Washington Redskins' tradition will be a huge asset to the Redskins. He is a leader and a great fit for this job. He's a big reason why I had any success in coaching. I'm really happy for him and I wish him the best." Gruden and Allen also worked together in Oakland. But Gruden signed a contract extension with ESPN last month. He said at the time that he'll "probably" coach again, but he said he's enjoying his role as a Monday Night Football analyst. "It's nice to be wanted," Gruden said of his relationship with ESPN. Gruden and Allen will get a chance to renew acquaintances soon: The Redskins host the Giants on Monday night. -- Sean Leahy
|

NFL.com Blogs Jason La Canfora «
Redskins hiring Allen first move towards Shanahan? I continue to hear from multiple league sources that Mike Shanahan remains the most likely choice to take over as the Washington Redskins’ head coach in 2010, and the hiring of Bruce Allen is but one move in an organizational overhaul... ...The Redskins will explore candidates to round out the front office in player-personnel roles, according to sources, with current personnel executives such as Eric DeCosta (Baltimore), Bobby DePaul (Chicago) and Doug Williams (Tampa Bay) among possibilities. The Redskins came close to hiring DePaul to replace Cerrato twice during the Gibbs regime, according to sources, and DeCosta, a rising star as Ozzie Newsome’s top lieutenant with the Ravens, began his career with the Redskins. Williams won a Super Bowl as the Redskins’ quarterback and worked under Allen for the Buccaneers in personnel. Snyder also has been impressed with the work of Morocco Brown, in his first season as Washington’s director of pro personnel, and he could be someone to remain in a revamped front office... ...Many will look at Allen’s hiring as a sign that Gruden could reunite with him in Washington, but multiple sources continue to tell me that Gruden will not coach until at least the 2011 season and is loving his job as an analyst on Monday Night Football. He signed an extension with ESPN, which I am told is ironclad for 2010 in terms of leaving, even for a coaching or “dream job” gig. “There is a zero percent chance that Jon coaches anywhere next year,” said a source close to the coach... ...Snyder thinks highly of several member of the staff, including defensive coordinator Greg Blache, who has seriously considered retirement in recent years, and secondary coach Jerry Gray, who was viewed as a possible successor to Blache (Snyder blocked Gray from interviewing to be the Houston Texans’ defensive coordinator during the offseason)... ...Allen’s hiring is a strong first step, but there is much more to come as the Redskins try once again to reclaim their glory and emerge from a long malaise.
My main gripe with the hiring of Allen has been his complete lack of accumen in the personnel department and history as being nothing more than a yes-man in personnel-issues. In light of this report, Allen may not be too involved in those issues after all. This would seem to make sense, in light of his and Snyders cryptic comments on the issue during the press conference today. If JLC's sources are correct and hiring Allen is just the first step, and we bring in DeCosta to handle personnel matters, hire Shanahan to coach the team and run the offense, and retain Jerry Gray as DC, I will do a backflip. There's not much more Snyder could to make me happy. |

No, because in all likelihood we will draft some lineman. If our offense gets better instantly then everyone on here will think they have what it takes to GM the redskins. |

I look forward to that problem. :) To me the biggest issue here is not whether Allen (or Vinny for that matter) is the person to lead the team. The biggest issue is that we have overhauled the organizational structure. Even if Allen fails, presumably we will bring in another real GM and continue to have a real FO structure. Thank you Snyder! |

Wouldn't it be interesting to see Gregg Williams get the job? Assuming he could forgive Dan, at the very least it was no secret that Cerrato didn't get along with GW. I still don't know who to put my money on, but this is definitely a glorious day. At the very least we will probably see our two first round picks go towards the O-Line given Allens history. He truly is the anti-Cerrato. |

A ridiculous amount of OL acquired in the draft and free agency, including 5 in a single draft during 1998. He was strapped by Buc's management in terms of spending, a problem that you won't see with Snyder. On top of that he has experience, and success, while working with a meddlesome owner in Al Davis. In fact the last time the Raiders were relevant was when Allen was picking players. He also understands what it means to be a Redskin. He was also responsible for drafting guys in Tampa like Rudd, Trueblood, Davin Joseph, and Aquib Talib. On top of that theres probably a lot of guys drafted by Tampa that are currently solid role players, for example if you were looking over guys drafted in the late rounds by the Redskins like Doughty and Montgomery you would probably think they were wasted picks, when in reality they're solid role players for us. He also seems to be famous for drafting a lot of one year wonders like Cadillac and Michael Clayton. Of course he also acquired Joey Galloway when Clayton started to struggle. No idea what is going on with Aaron Sears but it seems like he's had one to many concussions. Still he was a very good player when he was healthy. The one thing I do know though is our problems along the Offensive Line are going to get fixed this offseason. Anything after that is gravy. |

I think what VC proved is that you can make good choices with what picks you have, and that's not enough. Allen will have good picks, and busts, probably at a higher rate, but we will have more picks, and less throwaway picks. I don't see him giving up a 2nd and 6th for example for that guy from Miami. In addition, and much more importantly, he will rebuild a healthy team environment, and will - i believe - not play cushy toes with the owner OR "special" players, at least not to the detriment of the team. (what goes on behind closed doors stays behind closed doors ;) ). Further, we will have a better respect and credibility around the team, something lacking under VC and that should indeed lead to a better future. If you just look at drafts VC could make a case for himself staying. But he failed at the totality of the EVPOFO or whatever he was. Bruce Allen seems to have proven that he is, at the least, capable of running a professional organization. I can live with that. |
