I'm not sure why people care so much about the Sherman thing. Outside of Crabtree and his teammates/family there is no reason to take what he said personally.
And isn't a thug a criminal? Why is he being called a thug?
Yes, a thug is a criminal. And no one here has established why this an appropriate label for Sherman. Is Sherman lacking in sportsmanship? Yes. But this doesn't make him a thug. |
Re: Around the NFL Championship Weekend
I keep hearing about his Stanford education. Stanford's star LB was arrested for DUI last year.
Sherman also failed a PED test but had it overturned on a technicality about how his urine sample was handled, not because he was proven innocent. The cup leaked and the tech transferred it to another cup...that was enough to get out of it for Sherman. The name on your degree does not make you smart or even a good person. Case in point, the President went to Harvard.
Sherman isn't a thug. An asshole? Definitely. Arrogant blowhard? Absolutely. But by all accounts, he's an alright guy. No altercations with the law... I mean the guy's from Compton. If you can come out of Compton and end up being a generally good guy, then I have to pat you on the back. And why does everything turn political with you? You and your agenda pushing is getting real old. |
Re: Around the NFL Championship Weekend
Wonder if people were calling Tom Brady a thug when he went after the refs (carolina game) and proceeded to berate them?
Ahh...so only black kids with dreads and a big mouth are called thugs. Got it. |
Re: Around the NFL Championship Weekend
Calling him a thug is definitely a cheap shot and only shows the stupidity and ignorance coming from the person calling him that.

Before you label someone in a public way at least understand the definition of that word you are calling them. Getting a DWI, failing a drug test, or running your mouth in an ill-advised way on National TV does not make you a thug. |

It's just another way to say the N word. Let's be honest.

Lmao sorry but a real "thug" isn't a graduate of Stanford...

Pretty much. |
Re: Around the NFL Championship Weekend
Actually Sherman used the n word while Andrews was interviewing him. Fox got it on the dump button. Look at it on YouTube. However using it with an a at the end is obviously not the same as the other way. It's been used with an a in my family for years lol and is common among black folks.
RS "don't you ever talk about me!" Andrews " who was talking about you?" RS " that n@$?a Crabtree!" |

Re: Around the NFL Championship Weekend
It is a big deal because it is still used as a means of subjugating black people by some bitter racist people. The black community began using the word between one another as a way to take the power away from the word (or so I'm told), but unfortunately it just made stupid white people think it was ok to use themselves as long as there's an 'a' at the end. IMHO, I think it should not be used by anyone. Words have an immense amount of social power.
I agree with Matty about "Thug" it has become a substitute so people can continue to use prejudice to label people without feeling racist. Why call him anything? Why not just take exception to his actions? Oh well, such is our nature. |

I was saying that no one should say it, black or white, but not because it is unfair for white men, but because it is bad for society. But i don't mean to get any deeper into the issue. |

The funny thing about that is the hockey game that he references got a lot of thug comments. Hockey players are called thugs all the time. Its much more common than anyone wants to admit to. |

A thug is a person who commits a violent crime. Sherman acted like an asshole, not a thug. |
Re: Around the NFL Championship Weekend
I don't get all this Sherman reaction like he did something soooo bad. You put a microphone in the face of a man who just made the play of his life to put his team in the Super Bowl. He overcame a nemesis in the process. On top of that they challenged him personally for the win. What do you expect to get? A. A real reaction. B. A Political reaction based on marketing?

You can shift definitions all day. It was meant as a put down to a black guy. |

Ah geez...please don't start up the racism junk. Throughout my years, I've known the term "thug" to represent parties of all nationalities and races. Fine, let's not call Sherman a thug. But we can call him a jerk, punk, immature, provoker, classless, self-absorbed, and loud-mouthed. Did I leave anything out? |
Re: Around the NFL Championship Weekend
Looks like Crabtree is the true a-hole after seeing that clip. Easy to see now why Sherman was pissed.
|
Re: Around the NFL Championship Weekend
Let's just keep eliminating words from the vocabulary. How about we just say Sherman's actions struck most people as being double plus ungood?
I find it sadly humorous that in a discussion about "the N word", no one can even type it without fear of condemnation. |
Re: Around the NFL Championship Weekend
Have to say after hearing the tone in that video, it didn't seem condescending to me as I would have thought. STILL not a fan, but I ease my stance on him just a bit. The choking thing still pisses me off (and did more than the interview).

Whatever, it was included alongside monkey, and all kinds of crazy stuff. Context is key. You can say what you want I know what it meant. If you don't care that's fine and your business. |

When I first saw Sherman's clip, I thought - "What an ass." After seeing the Crabtree clip and gaining some perspective, it easy to see why he would react in the manner he did. While I hope I would react better, in my 20's and in the same situation, I almost assuredly would not. At the same time, understanding why Sherman acted in the manner that he did and accepting it as a normal reaction shouldn't change the expectation of a better response. It's a corollary of the "two wrongs don't make a right" - Just b/c it may be acceptable to act like an ass at a particular moment doesn't mean you should. |

Re: Around the NFL Championship Weekend
Also, on Crabtree - if the excuse for Sherman was the 'adrenaline, big game, big play, in the moment" is the basis for him acting like an ass, is Crabtree's reaction all that different.
Big play, you're trying to make it, you fail, you're season just ended and the biggest loudmouth from the other team who's been talking trash all game stick's his hand in your face to say "good game" after making a play off you. Crabtree's initial reaction seems almost restrained. Again, not sure I would have done anything different. And again, while understandable, Crabtree's reaction should have been "Thanks", shake hands and walk away. Two hyper-competitive guys in their 20's running on adrenaline. Both understandably reacting on instinct and emotion, neither being a particularly good example of "sportsmanship". Sherman's subsequent responses, as far as I can tell, have been reasonable and solid reactions. Based on those, I have a higher opinion of him than I did before the game. |
Re: Around the NFL Championship Weekend
I prefer the term, "roughneck" at least the connotation isn't as bad. I always view a thug as a person who'd knock your mother over and steal her purse.
|
Re: Around the NFL Championship Weekend
I'm letting it go. You gonna have racists, and they are gonna try to justify it.

lol ... it rarely is the way I like it, but that's the nature of the beast. I agree, the "N word" is now relegated to the equivalent of an obscenity. To me, that is empowering it. To you, it is appropriate. C'est le vie. |

Yes, you are - black, white and every other kind of racist - and all of them justify their bigotry as being acceptable. |

Back to the subject of Sherman. He was called all types of monkeys. Monkey was the favorite word thug was second. Your philosophy on bigotry reveals a special kind of hatred, but this is a football thread so who cares. |

Re: Around the NFL Championship Weekend
What Sherman said really wasn't a big deal, but for those that saw it live don't tell me you weren't like WTF was that all about? That type of reaction leads to it being talked about and dissected all week. Just how it works.
