Re: Jerome Mathis signed

Enough about Hackett already, he has shown up in entirely too many threads for no good reason. It's not like he's a stud or anything, he still has a TON to prove.
Let it go...and let's embrace whoever the Skins draft at WR.
I guess ignorance is bliss. Oh well, here are the facts on Jerome Mathis.

So allegations of his domestic dispute aside, the fact that he got into a fist fight with his own teamate should've been enough to discourage the Redskin's from signing this guy. God, how many times do I have to bring up Jeremy Stevens?

In all honesty, the number of fans looking the other way, just because he was a pro-bowl kick returner worries me.
This was the post I was looking for Js.

I will say this, and I know I already promised OaklandRed that I would give him a second chance, but the fact is if the Cowboy's sign this guy, almost everyone here starts laughing and making fun of the Cowboys. I will admit that I didn't think of that on my own but given our reaction to the Cowboy's going after Pacman, I'd say it's probably a fair assumtion.

Thanks for the links.
The one thing I noticed above all is that there is no comment from Mathis. If someone accused me of choking her, I'd make a comment. Why is there none? I'd like to hear his side of the story. It definitely doesn't look good.

About the dogs, it just sounds like he was not paying enough attention to them. That could happen to anyone that has outdoor dogs. I don't agree with having outdoor dogs, so I have 2 indoor dogs, but to each his own. It's hard for me to call that a run in with the law since it's a citation. A speeding ticket is a citation too.

I'm giving the Skins FO the benefit of the doubt on this one. Hoping when they interviewed him he explained what happened and they were satifsfied with his response. The skins know that if he gets into trouble or is a bad locker room guy then they loose a lot of credibility with the fans and the NFL. It's a risk, but apparently it's one the skins felt was worth taking.

I thought in light of everything we've been discussing with CJ, Pacman, Henry, and now Mathis these comments by Cerrato stood out

"Instead of just adding a couple of guys this time, we need [a draft] where we're adding quantity and quality guys. We need talented guys that can initially play a role and have the potential to become starters. And the biggest thing you need is good people."

Hey for all we know maybe after meeting with Mathis Vinny and co. were satisfied that he's not a bad egg and his legal issues are behind him. I sure hope so. As someone pointed out earlier he's still a young guy who could turn it around, so who knows.

Yeah, I thought about that early. Kinda ironic.
An NFL source agreed, saying: "If the kid can stay healthy, he's a weapon. At a minimum salary [deal], what do the Redskins have to lose?"

Perhaps some tarnishing of what former coach Joe Gibbs would call their good name, something owner Dan Snyder claims to treasure. But Texans general manager Rick Smith and coach Gary Kubiak at last week's NFL meetings assured Cerrato that Mathis isn't big trouble.

"They both said that Jerome's a good person who just needs a fresh start," Cerrato said.

Said Mathis: "I made some mistakes in my younger days, but I'm a different person. I'm not looking at Washington as a second chance. It's more like my last chance."
Well, I guess thats what you want to hear from a guy that once choked his girl friend when signing him to your team.

Re: Jerome Mathis signed
People, before you go singing the guy's praises and giving him the benefit of the doubt because Mathis has only been involved with "one" incidient that should concern us, PLEASE do you homework. If you had read the earlier posts in this very thread you would have seen that there was also an incident in which Mathis got into a fight with one of his own teammates. And, a quick visit to NFL.com reveals the following:

"Mathis has had two recent run-ins with the law. In December, he received a misdemeanor citation after his pit bull chewed through a fence and was behaving aggressively. In February, he was charged with assaulting his pregnant common-law wife, a charge that was later dropped at the woman's request."

So we've got 1. fight with teammate; 2. choking his pregnant wife (and leaving red marks according to reports); and 3. letting his mean pit bull chew through a fence (what kind of a dog even does that?......perhaps we can ask Michael Vick). Face it, this guy is a complete poop stain. I don't really care if he returns the ball 10 times for TDs this year, I don't want him on any team I cheer for. Get enough of guys like this and you become the Cowturds or Raiders.....sorry, not willing to pay that kind of price for success. This day in age in the NFL when character means more to most teams that ever before.......well, let's just say I'm just shaking my head over this one and leave it at that.
Have you never owned a dog? I've had dogs never give anyone issues that chewed through fences, jumped them, dug under them, etc... They're animals, they don't like confinement. He could've gotten the whiff of a female and been looking for some, who knows.

And have you also never played sports? Teammates fight, it happens, you man up and move on. You think none of the old school guys ever fought?
A lot of people used that argument against Sean Taylor and still to this day call him a "thug" because of that ATV situation where charges were DROPPED.

If he stays healthy, he's the best returner (outside of Hester) in the league.

Depth for WR, a great returner...I can't hate this move but I still wonder where it came from.
the DUI was dropped, not all of his charges from the ATV incident were
Wow, and it gets worse. Sean T didn't choke his girlfriend... he was defending HIS stolen property (and was caught up in the process)... kind of like he was defending his family when he was KILLED!!!!!!!!!!!!! To use ST as a comparison to this guy? Are you kidding me???? He loved his girlfriend AND his daughter!!! Not to mention the love we all feel for him as a Redskin??

Go have a few drinks with some others on this board that seem to share your opinion. You guys can have your fun. I've seen and heard quite enough.... Ciao.

You don't know that ST never had issues with his girl, I wouldn't think so, but none of us know.

BUT, since you weren't reading, apparently, the guy said he would want nothing to do with someone getting a DUI on our team. Sean got a DUI. He managed to get his way out of it however. That's what I was referring to and it is pretty clear, I even bolded the relevant text, nice try though bud.
