The NFL has a proud tradition of great Americans stepping up to the challenge of definding of Country. I don't know the numbers just yet of other wars but in my early Redskin reseach I know a couple of facts about World War II
638 NFL Players left and served in WWII.
21 NFL Players Killed in Action
44 REDSKIN left the NFL to serve in WWII
Redskin Players I can document as having been Killed in Action is [1] One and his name was Keith Berlem.
Redskin Players I can document going are:
Dick Todd
Frank Filchock
Wayne Millner
Charle Malone
Ed Justice
Ed Cifers
Fred Davis
Head Coach Ray Flaherty
Information from" "The Washington Redskins" 1990
I'm still looking to see if a Ted Lapka went as well. He was on the team 1943, 1944 and again in 1946 but I can find no record of where he was in 1945 and my guess is he was called up at the end of the war.
Have a great day guys thanks to guys like these and Army Ranger Mr. Pat Tillman.
