I would like to see a screen thrown to Portis out of the backfield. I don't think they have run that play all season. It would get Portis out in the open with blockers in front of hi. Look what Priest did with it.

I have said this on multiple posts in the last month. We don't design enough pure screens for CP. We pass to him as like a 5th choice on the checkdown after the tackle eligible. I mean you only need run a designed screen 4 or 5 times a game and teams cannot just blitz you to death b/c it is a play designed to punish over pursuit. It trains the defense early that if they go after us they potentially could get burned. It obviously want stop them from coming after us but it plants a seed in the back of their head to keep contain.

You know, I don't remember what thread it was in, but I started talking about screen passes and I got reamed for it. Quite a few people were telling me that we don't run screen passes under Joe Gibbs system, they're only quick hitches. Where are those guys at?

I feel that with Moss we can now actually use the WR screen more effectivly(SP). I mean if you think about it a WR screen is kinda lika a punt return. Once the ball is snaped the WR has to turn to the QB and wait for the ball, then by the time the ball is to him his blockers only really have to get the 1st wave of deffenders off the WR and its all down hill from there.

Like on a punt return, the returner waits for the ball and then hopefully his blockers can keep the first wave off of him and then its off to the races.

So, with Moss he has the quickness to help his blockers and get through the first wave, then he has the jets to go the distance. Where as with Coles last year I dont think that he is all that quick. Yeah Coles is fast but not quick, to have the moves to make deffenders miss... Just my thoughts...

Wow I saw them throw that screen to Moss and I was like not again that play never works very well then all pf a sudden Moss is gone and I was like god I love that play. I know plenty of us have trashed that play these last years but when exucuted right that play was beautiful. On that play Jacob's was passed by Moss as he blocked but then he went down field and passed Moss. I never knew Jacob's was that fast and it makes me wonder whats keeping him from being a big play WR.

When (ahem) Spurrier ran it with (ahem) Coles we always seemed to get positive yardage out of it. At least most of the time. The new design seems a little feast or faminish. Anyone understand why this is? Or is just being executed less properly?

The WR screen is not a play designed to pick up huge chunks of yardage.

It's basically an extended handoff designed to pick up 3, 4, or 5 yards. It also draws a defense in and will make a defense that is playing soft more honest, with the idea of hitting them over the top at some point.

It's a staple in a lot of team's playbooks.

I will admit that I hated the WR Screen. It never seem to work out right, but illregardless of the blocks, I see it as a play designed for your WR to beat their CB one-on-one. Gardner and Coles and Thrash, could never get it to work last year, and most of the time it doesn't work, but I think Brunell could audible to it with Moss, when the CB is playing off, and get 4-5 yards or more everytime! Moss can beat you one-on-one. I think the bottom line is you have to have a "playmaker" for it to shine as a play.
