You have to love how Gibbs goes to extremes to justify this guy and his 50 million dollar contract, Clinton is such a good blocker, and he's a real tough guy, OK, but is he a RB? Because he seems incapable of doing anything unless he has holes you can drive a truck through like he had in denver. mooby 10-08-2005, 12:09 AM Portis is exactly what I said he was from day 1, he is a system back, period! Because he seems incapable of doing anything unless he has holes you can drive a truck through like he had in denver. damn you're objective. portis isn't a system back, he put up 1300 yards last season. those aren't pedestrian numbers. Portis has earned his money imo. He has a second gear, and he's a threat to take it to the house anytime he has a ball. That's something I'm not sure Ladell Betts could do, although Betts has been performing great as a compliment to Portis. I take it you don't watch a lot of football, cuz i've seen this year and last year time and time again where it looked like Portis was gonna be stopped, then he speeds up and breaks a gain of five, maybe ten yards. skinsfanthru&thru 10-08-2005, 12:46 AM Portis has been a few inches away from breaking some big ones and as we saw his first carry as a skin, he can completely change the game on one normal turned spectacular play. I usually agree with your assesments of players but this time I do not heed your OPINION of Portis. I will admit that I am guilty of being against the trade for Portis, but that was due to me not knowing what kind of player we were about to recieve. Portis in my OPINION is one of the best if not the best in the league at picking up blitzes and throwing his body for a block. Also he is a TEAM player in every sense of the word. Portis came here and due to his play on the field he has turned me from being a doubting Thomas to a TRUE BELIEVER!!! As I stated earlier in this thread and many times on this site when ever people start to thrash Portis, who else would you want? People tend to forget that we do not have Davis no more, we let him go for Candidate, that was a smooth move Spurrier. And until last season Betts was injured as often as Rex Grossman. So again who else would you want in our backfield? I guess this is where I should request for forgiveness from one Mr. Clinton Portis. Make no bones about it, I am one of his biggest fans, and I am as happy as a child in a candy store that the Washington Redskins have him in there backfield. 12thMan 10-08-2005, 01:54 AM That's talk about what's really important... How bout those black shoes? I thought they were tight. http://www.redskins.com/uploads/photos/perm/main/FMGMHGDOPFCB/55839054PG.jpg It's all about the shoes, Matty....all 'bout the shoes! Warpath 10-08-2005, 03:12 AM All you people with Portis as your Fantasy RB and begging for a TD....who cares as long as the team wins. After reading some of your selfish posts, I had to skip straight to the end to deliver this message. Go Skins, We can win with or without a Portis TD! GO SKINS! offiss 10-08-2005, 04:05 AM I usually agree with your assesments of players but this time I do not heed your OPINION of Portis. Well I would start with the same guy I said at the time when we decieded to seek a trade for Bailey, and that would be 1 Sean Alexander! He was available and we could have had him straight up for Champ, instead of giving up an additional 2nd rd pick, he is more of a Gibbs type back, and at the time he wanted out of Seattle, I am sure we wouldn't have had to pay him like Clinton either, Clinton was paid like he ran behind the Arizona Cardinals line for 1600 yards, now if he managed 1600 yards with the cards I would give him his due, but the fact is Denver can take a scrub and make him look like Barry Sanders, whoever want's to keep pointing to his 1300 yards can, if you run a guy enough times anything is possible, the fact is he had the lowest YPC out of any legitimate back, I know it's a tough pill to swallow because of all we invested in him, and all we could of had if we didn't go the Portis route. You are correct about Betts though, I personally felt Betts was a better back for our team than Portis, and I still believe he fit's Gibbs style far better than Clinton, but Betts is turning out to be a back that can't alway's be counted on week in and week out, to many nagging injuries. Put Bett's in denver and he would be the next 1600 yard back. When we traded for Portis I said we would have to change the blocking scheme to fit him, it took Gibbs a year but he finally did it, or did he? Despite the talk of a new blocking scheme, has anyone really seen anything remotly resembling what they do in Denver? I haven't. As for Clinton being a game breaker? As far as I can tell he had 1 game that could be considered a game breaker, and that was last season in our opener VS Tampa, and really it was only 1 play that allows that to be considered, that's it, I don't want to hear about his potential game breaking abilities, because as Parcells say's, potential means you aint done nothing yet! What he did in Denver is in the past, that counts for zero as far as we are concerned. Is Clinton a good blocker? Maybe? Is he a good teamate? probably, Does he work his butt off? Again probably, but so do plenty of other backs in the league who never see the field, all those thing's are great but if it doesn't translate into success running the ball then really what good is it, A good attitude is a great thing but it has to be kept in perspective, these guys are there to play football and produce, there not there to be finding homes for abandoned kittens down at the local supermarket. S. Alexander is a good RB I can not deny that, but he is already what 28, 29 years old? And if you look at RB's over the age of 30 you see throughout the history the RB's production starts to decline at the age of 30. Hell look at C. Martin for the JETS. Yeah, he had a hell of a year last year, but where is he this year? What makes you so sure that we would have gotten Alexander cheaper, the reason why he wanted out of Seattle was because they refused to pay him what he wanted. Also yeah Denver does seem to have a pretty good system but let me ask you this, what is Anderson, Bell, and Dayne doing for them this year? Until the KC game there running game was pretty much non-exsistant. I understand what you are saying about Portis, but I look at the fact that he is talented, young, and a team leader. To me as a fan that is worth more than being old, talened and upset with your team because your own team feels that they can replace you. Also yeah Portis had the lowest ypc last year for a back with 1,000 plus yards, but look at his stats compared to LT's stats, they are not that different other than the TD's. jamf 10-08-2005, 05:48 AM portis ran for 1300 yards with the worst passing team in the nfl. teams stacked the line ever play of everygame. until you see a consistent passing game, you wont see what portis can truely do. i think ladell is a decent back, but if he had to be the redskins #1 last year, he wouldnt have broken the 1000 yard mark. ladell looks good on certain plays because he is running draws on 3rd and 15... |
