I have a question that I was curious about for any rules buffs out there. The Redskins kicked their game winning field goal on 2nd down. Although Novak hit made the kick, I was wondering, if he had missed the field goal on 2nd down would he have had another shot at it on 3rd and 4th down???? I thought he would have another chance but I was told numerous times that he only gets one shot at the field goal no matter what down it is??? If anyone knows the answer I'd appreciate it..

Hail to The Redskins!!!

I believe that so long as he doesn't actually kick the ball then yeah they have another shot. Like if it's a bad snap or hold and they just fall on the ball, then they'd get another kick

yeah that is what it is, some coaches do it so that if there is a bad snap they get another shot but that is a lot of faith to let nick kick a 39 field goal

it is actually genius to kick on 2nd down in that case. if there is a bad snap it stands to reason you'll end up with ball on like the 40 or 45 making it a real long field goal. if you have tried it on 2nd rather than third (like many coaches for the reason TAFKAS pointed out) then you still have 3rd to make some yards back and make it a reasonable kick. in fact when they got the delay i wondered for a second if they would run a play to move the ball up maybe.

I would have ran one more play up the middle to make up the 5-yard penalty, then kick on 3rd down. It all worked out well for us, but Gibbs would have heard it if he missed.

Allot of things can happen when you run another play and Gibbs liked his odds with going with the kick.

The rule is that as soon as the ball is kicked it is a "change of posession situation". Same as for a punt on second or third down. You can take the snap in punt formation and run or pass or fumble and cover it up and you can snap it on the next down. But if you kick it ...

I agree, it was a chicken shit call to have brunell just fall in the middle on first down. Why wouldnt you alteast run with the hb on first down and tell him to run up the middle. Then, after getting a penalty and forcing a rookie to make a 39 yd field goal...It shouldnt have come to that, we should have run on first and second down, and have portis just run in the middle both times, then kick on 3rd, giving you a free down to have the snapper throw it away if its a bad snap to retry on 4th.

Had he missed that field goal, Gibbs would have been reemed out. As you can tell by my threads following the game, I am still very unhappy with Gibbs coaching, yes, we are 3-0, and that is awesome. But we arent a playoff team yet and we are doing stupid things. Gibbs is afraid to coach if we have a lead. He doesnt try to pad a lead and make sure we dotn have a chance to lose in the last second, like we always do. The bears could have kicked a field goal and one, just a field goal. And we were never even in teh cowboys game, and we should have lost to seattle, he should have made that kick.

Im glad luck is on our side, we have needed it. I hope it stays with us long enough for gibbs to learn how to coach again. Yell at me now if you must, but sometimes you have to be a fan, and be realistic...

One of the cool things that I thought about Nick's kick, after I stopped screaming that we WON!, was that Nick nailed the first attempt which did not count due to the Delay of Game, so he was able to kick it again with that same "feel" in him that he had just gotten from making it the first time. That was actually a good thing. Sort of like a mulligan in golf. So the distance did not really matter, he was kicking it through the middle and would have made it from 50 yards out.
