I think he makes a really good point here:

Charlottesville, VA.: I'm so TIRED of the national media and their obsession with hating the Redksins (e.g. Len Pasquerelli, Don Banks, Peter King, etc., etc.)...do you think that people on the national scene will start to recognize that this team has the capacity to be for real?

Could Joe Theisman be right?

Michael Wilbon: This is a great question to end on. Joe Theisman, for those who aren't aware, picked the Redskins to win the Super Bowl. Now, that's what we call a "homer" pick since Joe lives here and played for the Redskins and it's the team that's close to his heart. He's hardly a neutral observer. BUT Joe Theisman works at his craft. He works at it like he's going to be cut tomorrow. There are years when Joe thinks his old team stinks, and he'll say it. But he's loved the way this team looked and right now, he looks pretty damned good. As for anybody else, I don't much care about preseason prognostications. People love that stuff. They ask for predictions here every week, and when I say that stuff matters not a damn, some folks get grumbly...I, for the record, picked the Redskins to go 9-7, and I'll stay with that. But I do believe you win first, then become good later...at least in the case of teams on the rise with no recent pedigree...Capacity to be for real? Every team has the capacity...It ain't about capcity, it's about realizing it...Three weeks in, the Redskins look like they're ready to make a serious move in that direction. But don't go throwing any parades just yet.

Don't forget Theismann also picked the Patriots to win the Super Bowl against the Rams. He was probably the only talking head to do so and he was right. Let's hope he's the only one right again!

Yeah I mean Theismann isn't a uber homer or anything. He may have let a little emotion get to him but it is at least based in some serious analysis. One thing Wilbon didn't mention that we have thrown around a bit today is that Theismann lives here so he probably gets more Skins info than most. Maybe he has a better read on this team than most national media. I hope so. I think winning the SB is probably a ridiculous pick even today but I certainly think we're not "the worst 3-0 team ever" and do deserve some love.

I do think that because we've beaten all NFC teams so far that we are going to have a pretty good shot at securing, at a minimum, a wildcard spot later in the year.

I also enjoy Wilbon -- Super Bowl is a bit too far, and even playoffs might be a stretch simply because our division has improved so. I could see three teams from the east go to the playoffs (but the South will probably send at least 1 of the wildcards.) Philly, Dallas, and the Giants are all playing well, let's hope we can keep winning and hold on to at least 2nd place.

I think we have a pretty rough schedule this year. However, our offensive play is an amazing difference from last year. Againt the Seahawks we controlled the ball, moved it well (3rd and longs suck, but converting one is converting one.) for most of the game. We have a shot.

we have the hardest record in the NFC, maybe not the league but easily in the NFC. We have 3 "free games" left this year. and that is the entire nfc west that we haven't played. beyond that we will be fighting for wins. I can see us easily not making the playoffs but we got to keep some faith. I think it is harder for us to make the playoffs than to get out of the NFC during the playoffs. The NFC is weak, and the skins argruably are the 3-4th best team, couple that with some luck and we can make it out of the playoffs.

You're right about the schedule, if we do make it in this year, even on a wild card spot, we're in for a hell of a season. If we can beat some Division opponents we'll be good, but we're playing in a hell of a tough division this year. We're gonna have to get some more points and some stiffening on Defense, but with just a little tweaking here and there I think we're playoff bound.
