Will Gibbs Open Up the Offense Now?

We're taking shots downfield way more than last year. With our d and portis there's no need to open it up like "the greatest show on turf". I do think a little more agression on first down is needed and I wish they would simply move the pocket on every play since that seems to work pretty well but I can't complain about the number of shots downfield. They have had like 8 in the first two games. I think we had 8 last year. Our intermediate routes need a little fine tuning maybe in design and/or execution. Guys should be able to get open based on the design but they don't seem to be getting open consistently so is it the execution of the desion or the design? Or are the QBs simply missing them? Brunell had some hideous throws during the pokes game. A couple real head scratchers. How many times did I say to myself "Where the hell was that thrown to?"

Not WR screens RB screens which if you watch the Eagles, Pats, and Colts all use these effectively against the Blitz. Not slow going either rapidly developing screens.

A team won't stop coming after you if you don't make them pay once in a while.

We have to put more pressure on the opposing qb. What is up with our pass rush? Also our O-line needs to pass block much better. If Brunell doesn't get better protection, it will be in wild card Ramsey's hands.

We do need to put more pressure, but Parcells was smart to line up 3 & 4 wideouts when he felt the blitz could be on. That was enough for the D to audible out of blitz & play cover 2 or zone cover 2.

The only pressure he let us have was up the middle & Parcells knew Adams & Allen where tough enough to handle the pressure & they did.

So that only left us with an outside blitz & using 3 wideouts & 1 TE or dbl Te with 2 wideouts made blitzing really tricky.

Thank god for Sean Taylor & his ability to HIT..!!! One great thing about Sean is he can hit hard.

Crayton caught what would have been a 1st down & Taylor rocked him with a hit that sent the ball back to the line of scrimmage. :smashfrea

I think something a lot of fans forget is that Gibbs once had offenses known for the ability to make big plays (and comebacks). I do agree that the current offense has been way too conservative, but I think Gibbs will look at the game tapes and make the necessary changes so we can score more than 20 points a game consistently. I also think our chances against Seattle are good. Didn't the Seahawks struggle last year against big plays (look how they played the Rams in three games). And they aren't always good at handling the run.

Gibbs used to take alot of flack for his playcalling in the 80's. One of our favorite Redskins Art Monk used to catch alot of 2-3 yd passes. While keeping the game conservative we'd bust one long to Virgil Seay, Gary Clark or Alvin Garrett. I think you'll see some magic in the weeks to come from Gibbs' offense. The dump offs to Thrash, Cooley and Royal are the game winners. Short yardage time consuming passes along with the run. We older folk all know the old school ball control style. It works. Look at people around the league counting on their defense again these days instead of trying to score 100 pts. Check the Colts last game... Gibbs is back and so is the MAGIC!

Part of the magic was that Gibbs would sucker-punch defenses with the deep pass, after drawing them in with the run and short pass, but he did that throughout the game-- not just in the final 4 minutes. The problem is, Brunell is still trying to find the timing with the receivers on the short-to-intermediate routes, and up until the last 4 minutes of the Monday night game, he was uninclined to throw deep unless the receiver was wide-open. Once Brunell and the receivers get in-sync on the short and medium routes, things will begin to open up, as they'll be able to sustain more drives and establish the conditions required to set-up a successful deep passing game.

isn't Gibbs struggling with the notion of playing too *much* like the 80s? i think he'll get it eventually, but calling the plays he did back then or counting on 4th quarter heroics isn't what it's going to take.

anyone catch that 3rd and short Counter-Trey late in the game that got 3-4 run blitzed into oblivion? Portis got dragged behind the line with the guards in mid pull and we had to punt. it seemed so inappropriate (anachronistic?) and even Madden had to say something.

Aarrrgghhh.......as opposed to passing it and stopping the clock. Yeah that's smart!
