Jason La Canfora: Hello everyone. I actually made it here on time for a change. Since we last chatted I have done much meditation, and believe I have stumbled upon some universal truths. Patrick Ramsey has a short, short leash out at FedEx Field. Any quality innings Curt Schilling gives my Red Sox down the stretch must be considered a bonus. Arsenal will be hard pressed to nab a Champions League spot (okay, that one might be a bit of wishful thinking). "London Calling," is without a doubt the best album released during my lifetime (31 years).
Okay, with that out of the way, let's see who you guys are slicing and dicing this week. My guess is at least 50 percent of these questions will be Ramsey-related. Please prove me wrong?

Washington, D.C.: I know people only say this is a preseason game, however, given the poor play of Patrick Ramsey in earlier games, this has to be an important game for him in trying to solidify his position as the #1 quarterback. How do you see tonight's game for Patrick Ramsey, and how long before Gibbs makes a switch to Brunell if Ramsey continues to play poorly? You have to think that Gibbs would like to redeem himself by bringing in Brunell.
Jason La Canfora: Okay, I had to take a QB question off the top. Maybe we can kill 100 birds with one stone here.
This is definitely a big game for the coaches, Ramsey and the entire offense. This is not your normal preseason when you have starters playing the entire first half of every game.
Saying all of that, barring injury I see Ramsey starting the season. If the picks are still coming and the offense is still struggling going the bye - and all of this is hypothetical - then I could see a change coming then, at the earliest.
If things are bad, I do not think Brunell will have to sit ont he sidelines as long as Patrick did last year. That's just my take on it. Again, a decent start, which Patrick is certainly capable of, and all of this should die down a bit.

Alexandria, Va.: The Stones are opening for the Patriots. Is anyone good going to open for the Redskins?
Jason La Canfora: Tony Orlando and Dawn are free I think ...
How about a Bad Brains reunion? If Gibbs and his guys can get back together for a chance to return to DC glory, let's turn over FedEx Field to HR and the gang.

Silver Spring, Md.: Will the redskins use Darnerian McCants more often this season? Please!!
Jason La Canfora: D-Mac is in a bit of a bind. I had a story written about he and Dyson, but then LaVar spoke the other day and it didn't get in the paper.
Both of those guys have something to show. Darnerien is giving special teams a shot but admits he is way down the depth chart there, and he is still not fully healed from a nasty cut on his right palm.
Gibbs spoke about being impressed with Dyson during camp, but has never seemd to take a shine to McCants. I think he likes Dyson's experience.
In the end, though, they both might be on the bubble.

Washington, D.C.: Jason,
Have the defensive coaches indicated what role LaVar will have? The Post reports that he'll act like a down lineman and rush the passer, but LaVar didn't really like that role when Marvin Lewis had him do the same thing..
Jason La Canfora: He spent a lot of time this week working with the D line and I think he will be used as a pass rusher primarily at first, particularly in third-down situations.
When this staff took over last year LaVar talked openly about doing whatever is asked and kind of chided himself for not being that way when Marv was here, so I don't think it will be an issue now.
_______________________
Baltimore, Md.: After it's all said and done, who do you expect to be the Redskins long-term QB: Ramsey or Campbell (or neither)?
Jason La Canfora: I'd have to say Campbell for now, given what they gave up to get get him.

Washington, D.C.: Jason,
Can you give us an update on the CBs? Is Walt Harris getting healthier? I'm worried that neither he nor Rogers will be ready by the opener...
Jason La Canfora: Walt is not expected to play tonight, and while that's not a good sign, there are still two weeks until the opener. Carlos is a great athlete and I think he will be in shape for Sept. 11 if need be.
Either way, depth at that spot could become a concern over time. The coaches are looking really hard at Garnell Wilds and Rufus Brown for that nickel spot should Walt's injury linger.

Farmington, Conn.: Jason,
Do you have any insight into which 5 receivers the team might keep? I continue to expect Taylor Jacobs to step up, but he's always hurt. At what point does the team cut their losses with him?
Jason La Canfora: Well, barring injury - and assuming Taylor Jacobs gets back to practice soon - Moss, Patten, Jacobs and Thrash are locks. Return specialist Antonio Brown, also a receiver, will make it as well, and unless others step up, Gibbs could decide to go with just those five; it would leave them short a tall Wr, but they could put Cooley out wide in the red zone if need be, and it would create a spot for an additional RB or LB, positions where many tough decisions loom.
_______________________
Coconut Creek, Fla.: Carlos Rogers looked like he got burnt to a crisp on those 2 plays last week. I know he was out of shape from the injury, but wasn't the main reason he was the 3d DB picked in the draft because he wasn't as fast as some teams would have liked? Have those concerns resurfaced at all from what the Skins have seen of him?
Jason La Canfora: Trust me, he's plenty fast. He was spent after only returning to practice a few days before that game from a prolonged injury absence. I think he'll be full go by opening day, and as hard-nosed as these defense coaches are, they'll make sure the rookie is fully conditioned.
_______________________
Washington, D.C.: I am very intrigued by Robert McCune. Is he be good enough to see PT during the season?
Jason La Canfora: I think he will be a special teams stud right away. Given the logjam at LB, he might have to bide his time until injuries crop up - and they always do at that position, eh?
_______________________
Philadelphia, Pa.: Jason, As you know the NCAA is starting to eliminate discriminatory mascot names. Do you think that this issue will touch the NFL and the MLB at some point down the road?
Jason La Canfora: It's certainly something to watch. If the climate continues to turn in that regard, I believe there will be more pressure put on pro teams as well.
_______________________
Alexandria, Va.: Jason - Your article this morning recounts the perils the 'Skins offense has faced this preseason in their opponents' defenses. Looking ahead to the regular season, is anyone encouraged by the fact that the team likely doesn't play a high-end defense until week 8 vs. Philly?
Jason La Canfora: You would think that would work in Washington's favor, but after watching them in, say, Cleveland, last season, it seemed the caliber of the opponent was not the issue. They couldn't get going against anyone - maybe the Giants in Week 15 or whatever that was - which was why the coaches expressed so much concern.
_______________________
Germantown, Md.: Hey Jason,
How long do you think it will take Taylor Jacobs to push Patten for the #2 receiver role and who do you think will fill in for him in the regular season as the #3 receiver if he is not ready to go?
Jason La Canfora: Ie he can't get on the field, I think it's going to take a long, long time. Taylor is a terrific guy and I would love to see him thrive and he had everyone inside the team really excited about his progress this offseason, but he just can't seem to stay healthy, particularly this time of year, which is when guys really make a statement for more playing time.

Long Island, N.Y.: Hi Jason
In my opinion last years offensive woes were roughly 30% QB (across the board), 30% bad line play (welcome back John) and 40% bad play calling (hate to say it). Your opinion? How much do you think we improved in these areas?
Thanks
A (gasp) N.Y. Skins fan
Jason La Canfora: Interesting. Off the top of my head, I'd say that sounds right.
As for where it's going, it's hard for me to say. Preseason is preseason, but from what we've seen there appears to be much room for improvement, right? Can't say they have done too much thus far to make you think all of the turnovers, penalties and mistakes are a thing of the past, but, again, it is still just August. (Barely).
_______________________
New York, N.Y.: Hi Jason:
Two questions for you: First, Patrick Ramsey. We know he has a great arm and is liked by teammates, but he still is struggling with pocket presence and forcing balls. After three years in the NFL is this something that can be corrected, or will be corrected with the Redskins, or are we seeing a QB change around week 10 or 11?
Second, the receivers. I know their height has been talked about, but honestly, with Ramsey's struggles (and the teams as a whole) in the red zone is the lack of a sizable receiver something to worry about? All we have is Cooley who is very good, but we have no one to throw a fade to, and no big receiver for Ramsey to find and move the chains on a 3rd-and-9.
Thanks.
Jason La Canfora: I think you nailed it on the fade. That is a play they need to become a go-to again. Gardner caught a few down the sideline last year, and you could see his size come into play on the jump-ball in Carolina a few weeks ago.
I think you need some size at WR, and if I had a gun to my head I would say Dyson makes it in that role, but given all of his injury problems and time spent out of football, it might not be wise to expect too much out of him either. It could definitely be an issue.
_______________________
Ashburn, Va.: Given what you have seen thus far in the preseason, what kind of record do you expect this year? Before the preseason started, I was thinking 9-7, but now I'm not so sure!
Jason La Canfora: It's still early, and a lot could change, but I think at best this is a .500-ish team. At worst, with this schedule, six wins could prove tough to repeat.
As I said a few weeks ago, until they prove they can win in the division and win consistently at home, it's hard to project big things.
_______________________
Bethesda, Md.: I noticed in last night's game (ATL-JAX) that the starters played into the 3rd quarter at several positions. Who stands to get the most playing time tonight at FedEx?
Jason La Canfora: Teams usually utilize on the third presesaon game as the big tuneup, playing the starters the most, and then do not expose anyone to injury in the fourth game. But the Skins starting offense has already played the equivelent of a full game, so they are clearly putting a premium on these exhibition games.
It will be tough to get much going against Pittsburgh's starting D - especially if they play the entire first half - so I could see Ramsey going into the third quarter.
Gregg Williams said on Wed. that his top defense unti will play into the third quarter as well, so the fans should get their money's worth tonight.
_______________________
Washington, D.C.: How have Nemo's fumbles hurt his position on the team? Is the coaching staff just chalking it up to being a rookie?
Thanks!
Jason La Canfora: Despite Gibbs's hatred of turnovers and his repeated musings on them this week, when asked about Nemo he gushed, even with the fumbles. He's a rookie, and he can learn to protect the ball better. He is playing at a level so above when he faced at The Citadel, and certain mistakes are expected.
I think he will be put in goal line situations sooner rather than later and can shine on special teams. He has been a real revelation in the preseason and has everyone at Redskins Park excited.
_______________________
Raleigh, N.C.: So much has been made of Joe Gibbs' system being an old school system and not advanced enough to deal with defensive schemes in the NFL today. I'm sure that adjustments were needed, but I just refuse to believe that Coach Gibbs is that far off base... How much of the Skins' lack of success last year do you contribute to lack of talent/poor decision making by players? How much to a mental issue with the players not believing in the system?
Jason La Canfora: Plenty of blame to go around. But the bottom line is the Skins had trouble with clock management and replay decisions, over-emphasized protection, had too few multi-receiver sets, never got the ball downfield and failed to get the best out of Portis and the running game. Many, many players stumbled on offense, but when you rank 30th in the NFL, the coaches surely figure in, and that staff has been stand up about the whole situation. They accept criticism and do not shy away from responsibility.
_______________________
Washington, D.C.: Jason,
Do you think Patten has replaced Cooley as Ramsey's go-to guy? Or will Patten be the big play receiver and Cooley will be more the short yardage / first down receiver??
Jason La Canfora: I think they are saving Cooley for the regular season. Ramsey already is locked in with him. That's one of few sure things in this offense. They don't want to give teams fresh film of him in any of the new sets they have planned, and need for Patrick and the new receivers to get in sync. Don't worry, when the games count you'll see plenty of No. 47.
_______________________
Silver Spring, Md.: Hey jason, thanks for doing this! I've been trying to get this through to Wilbon, but maybe it's a boring question... How does the O-line look to you, improved or still unspectacular? The Skins supposedly have great players on the ends and at center now, and "the best in the business" coaching them... I haven't gotten to see much this year, so I was hoping to get some help! Thanks!
Jason La Canfora: They still have a lot to prove. If Samuels is going to be put in the elite with Ogden and Pace, he needs to step it up. Jansen coming off a big injury, Rabach was more of a supersub, reserve guy in Baltimore and is now being asked to start every Sunday. Dockery has to eliminate the penalties and hone his technique, and I have a feeling Randy Thomas is going to have a big year.
Pass protection and run blocking need work. With Portis expected to play a decent amount tonight for the first time this preseason, that is definitely an area to watch.

Arrington Happy Now?: The consensus on TheHogs.net (http://thehogs.net/) , the premier Redskins fan site, is that this Arrington deal that was struck is a positive for both the team and LaVar. But I'm somewhat concerned about the voiding of his contract. Does that mean that if LaVar has a great 2 years and makes the Pro Bowl each year, he can void the contract and walk?
Jason La Canfora: I believe so. I think that well below the surface there has been a thought throughout this grievance process that LaVar would not be here too deep into this contract, and this settlement would seem to point to that. The cap hit would be too massive to anything for another few years, but 2007 sounds about right.

Syracuse, N.Y.: Hey now! Love your work. Does Clifton Smith (Syracuse) have any chance of making the team? Also, how bad does this team need a GM? It seems like all the moves that Gibbs/Cerrato/Front Office has made including signing Brunell and drafting Campbell are questionable, no? I mean, we'll see what we'll see. But shouldn't we have kept our first round for 2006 and if we really stunk it up, drafted a quality QB like Leinhart. IMHO Skins need a QB right now that can manage a game, perhaps a Kitna or Dilfer type. What are your thoughts?
Jason La Canfora: Thanks so much. I'm a Syracuse grad. Have you guys pulled out the wool comforters yet? I graduated on Mother's Day in blizzard up there.
Clifton is certainly in the mix.
Time will tell on the GM front, but there are no shortage of people around the NFL who question the front office set up here.

Washington, D.C.: With talent at LB with Arrington, Washington, Holdman and Marshall.. has Coach Williams ever toyed with a 3-4?
Jason La Canfora: he certainly brings in extra linebackers, especially in third-and-long situations, and sometiems to me it even looks like a 5-2. Guys are moving around so much there, it's tough to pin it down, which is part of what makes that D so effective and confusing.

Arlington, Va.: I'll ask about a player no one else is thinking about. Ade Jimoh. Ever since he's been here, it seems like the only thing he's good at doing is checking out the number of the jersey of the guy who just burned him for a touchdown. Is there more to him than that, or is that a fair summary of his talents? I literally groan when I see him running onto the field.
Jason La Canfora: You are not the only one who feels that way. I don't think you'll see Ade on the field in anything other than special teams situations during the season. He thrives on that unit and has been a major contributor, and that's no small thing, particularly to this staff.

Washington, D.C.: Kinda of an unusual question, but wondering if you can shed some light. What's up with this stupid Redskins.com TV propoganda theme? And I see it features Larry Michael who just happens to be the play-by-play radio weasle that canned and replaced Frank Herzog. Moreover, Gibbs is now doing a weekly show on WTEM that now features Bram Weistein (not with the old crew that included Steve Czaban), and I've heard that Gibbs was very upset with some things Czaban said in the past. This is on top of the fact that the Skins have bought out an independent fan site, Extremeskins.com. (On top of the fact that they revoked tickets from The Post.)
Is this a corporate behemoth getting out of control? It looks like they are trying to consolidate power and create a propaganda machine that will brainwash the fans.
Jason La Canfora: The Washington Redskins and Six Flags will take over the world. Bow down now or be destroyed!
Do you think Dan rides roller coasters?
_______________________
Washington, D.C.: Will Portis and S. Moss actually see the endzone this year on a somewhat more regular basis?
Jason La Canfora: They better. Is double-digit rushing touchdowns too much to ask for, or having a receiver with more than five TDS?
_______________________
Washington D.C.: Since you mentioned Arsenal in your opening, I was wondering if you follow international rugby?
You heard it here first, NFL players/coaches will soon start to use laterals the way rugby players do when they run. Watch Ed Reed and the Baltimore secondary..even Sean Taylor likes the lateral after an interception.
Jason La Canfora: Just a footie guy. Every once in a while I'll watch a little rugby, but I don't really know all the rules. Would love to attend a big match one day, though.
I'm with you on the laterals. Seems to be in vogue these days. Judging from that Carolina game, Sean's technique needs a little work.

Central, Pa.: Jason,
Any chance Tyler Lenda (#62) will make the team? I went to Penn State with him and I think he is a "Joe Gibbs type of player"
Jason La Canfora: I think with so many experienced pros on the second unit right now - Brown, Raymer, Freidman - and two young draft picks they are high on as well- Wilson and Molinaro - it will be tough.
Not sure of the top of my head about his practice squad eligibility, but that might be an option.

Arlington, Va.: Do you feel that there is a sort of media hatred toward the Redskins (outside the beltway of course)....I see some real venom toward my team....you hear certain media outlets talking about the Skins this year as if they were going to be the worst team in the history of football based on last year's performance...whereas when you hear about other teams that were horrible last year...the commentary isn't quite so scathing...am I imagining a discrepancy???
Jason La Canfora: Hard to say. I haven't heard any real venom recently, but then again, I might not be looking in the right place, either. I think the team has engendered a certain level of disdain with many in the media and public at large during the reign of Snyder, so that might have something to do with it.

Skins Optimisitc Land: Hey Jason,
Great chat! In your opinion, what is the biggest target on their back that the Redskins will have to watch for this year...
A. An injury depleted defensive backfield that gets picked on even by Eli Manning.
B. A thin defensive front
C. Inconsistent/Poor QB play
D. Lack of dominance on the offensive line
Thank you!
Jason La Canfora: E. All of the above.
Just kidding. Actually, I think the defense is in good shape and good hands, and while it may not reach 2004-levels, should be fine.
The overall offense - scheme, playcalling, QB, line - will be under heat to perform right away.

Washington, D.C.: I'm surprised you follow the EPL my friend. But, best of luck to T. Henry and the gang.
Any feeling about how special teams will do this year? I really miss the days of Brian Mitchell and seeing him score TDs on punt returns and kick-offs. When was the last time we scored like that?
Jason La Canfora: I think they have better depth and personel now and will take a step forward this season on special teams.
As for mr. Henry, ever wonder why he can't do anything near for his country as he does for his club? Maybe Wenger can take over France, which would be great, because I detest his typical post-game comments every weeked in the EPL.

Greg (Sox Nation): Jason,
Schill looked putrid last night, but that's for another discussion.
Anyway, my question is regarding the 2 rookie RBs we selected. I've heard good things about Nemo, but nothing about Manuel White? Your thoughts on both, and how they've looked so far.
Thanks.
Jason La Canfora: White is in a tough spot having to essentially learn to play H-back with no experience there. His learning curve will be long, but as long as he works his tail off on special teams I think he'll be alright until the rest of his game comes along.
Schill back to the pen?

Washington, D.C.: The Washington offensive line is way over-rated in my view. What's the feeling among the league coaches and players.
Jason La Canfora: I think you're view pretty much jibes with theirs.

Arlington, Va.: Isn't it clear that the coaches don't worry about the height of the receiver and that McCants and Dyson will not likely make the 53 man roster since they are not in the top 5 receivers counting Bryant? How many slots are allowed for the practice squad beyond the 53 regular limit?
Jason La Canfora: Neither of thsoe guys could go on the practice squad.
_______________________
Washington, D.C.: Hi! Can you give me an angle on Santana Moss? He pretty much vanished last year for the Jets, and it seems to me he's in a tougher position now for the Skins. However, he's still young, and he's still fast. How do you see his season going, and how desperate/loony would I have to be to take him onto my fantasy squad?
Thanks!
Jason La Canfora: About 10 words into reading your question I knew it was heading into fantasy football land.
I think he will be given every chance to show he is a legit No. 1 receiver; whether or not he makes the most of that opportunity is up to him. I'm not real savvy on the fantasy stuff, but I don't see him being a top few rounds kind of pick.

Deep Down: Jason,
I think deep down most objective fans know that Joe Gibbs did not have his best coaching season. However, the question that needs to be asked is whether or not Joe Gibbs is here for duration...the entire five years of his contract.
I argue vehemently with my other friends that if he can't get this team going soon, and if he isnt going to be here for all five years...then step aside and let Gregg Williams take over as our head coach.
Am I being too harsh? Your thoughts.
Jason La Canfora: That transition could certainly occur down the road, and the timetable could hasten should the Skins have a few more poor seasons.
_______________________
Woodbridge, Va.: Jason- Am I the only one who is optomistic here? I hate the turnovers as much as anyone, but what I saw last week against Cincy was the Skins just bowling the Bungles over with the run, completing long pass plays, protecting the QB. Our first string D also looked pretty strong. In sum, Turnovers=big problem. But last year, we couldn't even move the ball!
Jason La Canfora: There were definitely some signs of life, but, at least to the coaches and players, the mistakes kind of outweighed that progress. The goal is to play winning football, and that's not going to cut it.
_______________________
Orange County, Calif.: Do you think that Joe Gibbs and his staff are now given too little credit? It's like one losing season after 12 years and now they can't coach.
Jason La Canfora: Their record speaks for itself and Joe Gibbs is a Hall of Fame coach for eternity. But they were also candid about opening them selves up to new analysis and tarnishing that pristine past when they came back. I don't think anyone should every imply they can't coach, and it is probably unfair to hold them up to their past accomplishments, but some will.
It was Joe's worst season ever and it is the most recent season, so things get colored that way and sometimes perspective is lost. But everyone also knows that this is the ultimate "what have you done for me lately" league, and few coaches last very long in this era.
These guys are great teachers and no one works harder, but if the Skins don't improve Joe knows that criticism is part of the job.

(Barely).

Washington, D.C.: Will Portis and S. Moss actually see the endzone this year on a somewhat more regular basis?
Jason La Canfora: They better. Is double-digit rushing touchdowns too much to ask for, or having a receiver with more than five TDS?

_______________________
Arlington, Va.: Isn't it clear that the coaches don't worry about the height of the receiver and that McCants and Dyson will not likely make the 53 man roster since they are not in the top 5 receivers counting Bryant? How many slots are allowed for the practice squad beyond the 53 regular limit?
Jason La Canfora: Neither of thsoe guys could go on the practice squad.

Feel free to email me - lacanforaj@washpost.com - and I'll try to get to whatvever I missed later. Should have plenty of time before the game to catch up on email.
To all of those brave enough to venture to Landover during rush hour on a Friday, Godspeed (ever wonder why they don't play these things on Saturday nights?), and I'll chat with you guys in two weeks.
Have a great weekend.
Cheers.
