draft strategies what would you do?

If you had the opportunity to draft taylor with our #5, then draft winslow, then say a D-end maybe udeze, smith, or harris, take your pick, and a big tackle, let's say either wilfork or stark's, would you give up future draft pick's to do so, even if it meant losing gardner, trotter, the rest of our pick's this year, as well as next year and probably a few the following year? Now with that said consider that our team will be very young, we will be stocked at every position, and probably wouldn't need pick's over the coarse of the next 2 to 3 season's, as well as we would still have free agency if we need a quick fix, also keep in mind that a team with the kind of talent we will field, with a hall of fame coach in Gibb's, would be very attractive to a free agent looking for a ring, and willing to play at a discount to do so. I myself would do it, by the time we need pick's again we could have a couple of super bowl victories in hand.

I just responded to something similar in a different thread. While I think the Redskins need to build more through the draft, i dont think they should do it in one year. Yes we would have a great deal of potential but you never know who will end up getting hurt, who will be busts or a number of other things. Potentially we could get Shuler, Westbrook, Howard and Tom Carter with all of the picks this year, then we would have nothing in the future. WIth that said I think we need to draft Taylor and Winslow

Well, last year, Baltimore traded their #1 this year to the Patriots to get Kyle Boller.

I still believe if we can trade something next year -- plus maybe our 6th rounder this year for one of New England's two #1s -- let's get a D-lineman, the best available.

I agree I think we have to dip into the kitty next year for this year, we may not have to give up as much as I layed out but I think we have to make an effort to fill our need's this year, SC said you never know when you will draft 4 bust's, but that could happen just as easily over the coarse of the next 2 season's, I think the safest draft is this year, when this draft is said and done it will go down as one of the all time great draft's, let's take advantage of that.

I agree with the idea that we should try to get as much out of this draft as possible. This is one of the most talent-rich drafts in years, and the way I look at it, the sooner we get some talented young kids into Gibbs' and Williams' systems while those coaches are here, the better off this team and those young players will be over the 5-year window (hopefully) in which we will have the services of this coaching staff.

Like offiss said, you can have a busted draft in any year, so you can't concern yourself with that. I think you have to take what you can get in any draft, without relying too heavily on future draft picks. I see no problem with dealing Gardner, Trotter or Canidate and/or next year's first rounder, if it enables the Skins to get both Winslow and Taylor, and a solid pass rusher in the draft. The team's biggest areas of need would be filled for the foreseeable future-- long enough to maximize Gibbs' five year window of opportunity.

Gibbs himself has said he's not here to take his time building this team into a winner-- he expects to win now. Give the man what he needs as soon as possible, and let's get this "winning" thing underway!

The players on your wish list; you are talking about four 1st round picks. Where do we get the salary cap space to sign them all? We only have about $1m left currently.
Plus, as SkinsnCanes said, there could be a future unforseen need on this team that cannot be filled this year..like....
Some catastrophic injury to a position we do not have a good reserve, like runningback.
Smoot is a FA next year and we do not have enough salary cap space to resign him. The new CB's are good, but not as good as Smoot.
MLB Trotter is all but gone, who is going to replace him in the future.

Mitchell will replace him, and we'll save a decent amount of cash when we make some cuts. As far as depth at running back, do we have anyone else that can even compare to Clinton Portis? No. But we do have Betts, Trung (for now), Rock, Simon (or is he gone?), McCullough, etc. I think we have too much at running back. Keep Rock, McCullough and maybe Betts depending on what kind of offer we could get for him.

Also, the cap should go up considerably over the next few years if I read Sport's article correctly. If this is true, then we shouldn't have a problem. In another post Matty addresses the fact that the NFL makes it so you can sign draftees to a contract regardless of cap situation, he explained it and honestly it went way over my head, so check through the threads if you're interested in it!

I think it would be a miracle if we could get Taylor and Winslow. I'd love every second of it (and I'm a Florida fan!)

Mitchell is old and shouldnt be looked at as a replacement to Trotter, more of a sold fill in for the time being.

A point that was brought up that I hadn tthought about is that we have a hell of a coaching staff, and it might not be a bad idea to just load them up and let them coach players for longer. One of the skins biggest problems has been continuity and being able to play as a team, mabye we should jsut build our damn team, and coach them then next year only get a few key FA pickups and draft depth to build with, not look for a bunch of starters that are rookies.

I can pretty much say without a shadow of a doubt, that we wont get Winslow and Taylor. With that being said, the idea of maybe trading a next year #1 to say a New Englad, could be a good idea. We can still get a quality D-Linemen at that level fo the draft.

Id agree with you if I was a fan of any other team in the league. The idea of getting both is nearly impossible, but not until April 25th will I rule anything.

You know, sometimes in drafts a team will draft a player then trade it for someone elses pick as opposed to just trading their pick initially. I wonder if we will see any of that this year.

As another side note, i wonder if the vikings will make their pick while they are on the clock, lol
