Redskins Court Battle...

Is it just me or will a win by the Native Americans result in a big step towards being TOO sensitive?

I know we've covered this one before, but I've been thinking about it and I remember the previous "for" argument saying that if ANY group is offended, then the name should change.

I think that argument is kind of like the "What is art?" question. Art is many things to many people. If someone states, "Everything is art." then they are also saying that is the possibility that "Nothing is art."

If they were to win the case based on the reason that "some" people got offended, what's to keep EVERY OTHER PERSON OR GROUP to make the same claim. That type of decision would be far-reaching throughout society and NOT just the sports world. There has to be some standard that allows for this type of change, not just a "select" group that, more than likely, has lobbied to have even more followers.

a team named themselves the fighting whities as a partial response to team names like the redskins, and not only did whities not get offended, they also bought a whole ton of shirts...

i gues some people just need something to be angry about...

I completely agree. I've been wanting to have a reasonable discussion about this for a while. Last time it was brought up, people got WAAAAAAAAAAAAY too out of joint.

I'm not saying I see a solution to this problem. I just see that if the Redskins WERE to lose this fight, it would open a door that would be hard to close.

I think we can discuss this topic til we're all blue in the face, and in the end I think it's best we all agree to disagree and get back to more important things like question #3 or what your favorite pie is.

Actually more than anything, I just want people to concede that if "any" group that feels offended by any name gets it changed based on that, that will start a VERY crappy precedent. I just remember that was the majority argument last time, but it just doesn't work because when you say everything, it's just as easy to say nothing.

Everything blends into nothingness, which is why I feel there has to be a standard. What that standard is, I don't think will ever be figured out. I just think that's something that needs to be set...preferably by the smart people in the US.

On a complete side note, I think that wewhite3 KNOWS the answer to Question 3, he's just wanted to let us all feel stupid.
