Trump fires boards of U.S. military service academies

President Donald Trump on Monday said he had ordered the firings of the boards of visitors for all of the U.S. military’s service academies, the outside advisory panels that help oversee academic programs and student life, saying that the government’s training grounds for military officers had been invaded by so-called “woke” ideology.

“Our Service Academies have been infiltrated by Woke Leftist Ideologues over the last four years,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “I have ordered the immediate dismissal of the Board of Visitors for the Army, Air Force, Navy, and Coast Guard.” The president did not immediately announce the appointment of new members to the boards.

In his last year-end report, Chief Justice John Roberts called out what he deemed several areas of “illegitimate activity” threatening judicial independence. One of them was “threats to defy lawfully entered judgments.”

The report from just six weeks ago is worth revisiting in light of recent statements seemingly supporting such defiance from Elon Musk and Vice President JD Vance, following several Trump administration trial court losses early in its second term.

Experts and officials expressed alarm on Sunday after Vice President JD Vance suggested federal courts “aren’t allowed” to limit the White House’s “legitimate power.”

The controversy began on Sunday morning, when Vance tweeted his views on executive power.

“If a judge tried to tell a general how to conduct a military operation, that would be illegal,” he wrote on X. “If a judge tried to command the attorney general in how to use her discretion as a prosecutor, that's also illegal. Judges aren't allowed to control the executive's legitimate power.”

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump on Monday planned to sign an executive order that directs the Justice Department to pause prosecutions of Americans accused of bribing foreign government officials while trying to gain business in their countries.

According to a copy of a fact sheet seen by Reuters, the order is aimed at restoring American economic competitiveness by ordering "revised, reasonable enforcement guidelines for the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) of 1977."

Surprised this wasn't his first move, I mean trump and ethics go together so well!

OGE’s director supervises compliance with federal rules that require nominees to high-ranking posts, including cabinet officials, to disclose their assets and divest those that pose potential conflicts of interest. That’s proven to be a complicated task in an administration whose figures include hedge fund managers, investment bankers and financiers. In the first Trump term, OGE declined to certify Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross were in compliance with ethics laws.
