Kam Curl: Tag, Extend, or Walk?

He’s been great for us but as the new guys take over and review the roster, I’m a firm No on tag or big extension. If we would extend him, it would be short or prove it in a new defense/new team deal.

Couple reasons:
1. Not a big playmaker. Not a lot of turnovers
2. Forrest and Quan Martin. Forrest seems more like a Quinn player…aggressive and hard hitting. Joe Whitt has twice talked about Quan Martin without even being asked about him, he’s a big fan.
3. The same logic applies to ever position, these are NOT Peters/Quinn players.
4. There are some decent safeties on the market who are better if you do decide to spend at Safety
5. We have a ton of young guys at Safety and there are much more pressing needs at Edge and LB on defense

Thoughts?

He's definitely not getting tagged, and I'm not paying him top 10 safety money either - because he's not. Maybe he can be, but he hasn't been - could be coaching, could be scheme, could be he's just a decent safety.

I personally would like to see him back, but my guess is he'll test the market and they'll go from there.

If I look at the potential FA market, I like him but not enough to tag/overpay. But there's nobody else I'm looking at that might be available that would be a strong improvement, so I'm hoping they can do a deal with him that suits both parties. But yeah, if he gotta go, he gotta go. CB is the tough one this year, given we also have to rebuild teh edge and LB positions. S we can roll with what we have and a late round pick or 2.

Guys like Curl are a dime a dozen in the NFL. Plus he plays a position that isn't exactly the toughest to fill. Bye.

Jeremy Reaves made a good argument for him on Twitter this year - our last staff had him playing like 5 different positions. Not many guys can do that and it's a good excuse for the lack of highlights.

I would extend him but he had no turnovers last year - that means he should be affordable. I'd love to see what he can do with a staff that knows what he does well and puts him in position to use that. If his agent insists on top dollar let him test free agency but let him know we'd like to have him back at a reasonable price.

Bring him back and let him play strong safety. No more flexibility bullshit. He's a fucking safety, play him there.

Dan Quinn is a position flex coach too. Hopefully Whitt and Quinn do it better than JDR/Rivera

Resign him, S like him don’t grow on trees, the staff will get him to play his best ball yet.

I'm in the middle on this. He is certainly a solid started but his lack of turnovers will suppress his value. So if it's a reasonable deal sure bring him back, Martin is unproven and Forrest is still not really a guy you can count on to be significantly better. But if his offers get too high, and I'll let Peters decide what that figure is, then I'm OK with letting him walk.

I'm big believer in retaining our own players, although this is a new era so we should bring him back only if Curl is a good fit for Quinn/Whitt's schemes.
