I don't think you give Mariota $6 million to be a "camp body". That has to be up there with the highest paid backup quarterbacks...It's kind of high average as a one year cost, but not anything at allespecially when looking at total contract values.
BUT when you've got two other QBs on rookie salaries it makes that cap cost a lot less daunting

Yeah he’s clearly coming in as the backup… I don’t get the “what about Sam” nonsense. We paid JB $8m last year so yeah Mariota’s deal is right in line with backup money.

You need a veteran backup, if you're going to have a rookie QB starting day one. I'm fine with that signing for that reason. Hopefully Mariota won't have to take any meaningful snaps.

Sam barely has a full season under his belt. If you're going to have a high draft pick QB, you need a vet back up to help with their upbringing.
Mariota is awful, but would be a good babysitter. You would like it if we signed a 52 year old Gus Frerotte as long as it meant Sam was out the door. Lol.

Not a bad move, he's a pass rusher specialist. Not sure if he is still that good lately though.
I was never really a SH fan and at one point it was just you and I not loving him, but SFREDSKIN straight up owes us an apology, he was legit mean about the subject kind of loss respect for him and i get along with the majority here
Yeah forgot about that, he was riding the Sam high-horse pretty hard

JP Finlay seems to think JD5 is now a lock
All the dots seem to be connecting that way.

Not necessarily, as Keim commented, they wanted Darnold first and he is far more similar to Maye. Mariota was who was available and had worked with Brian Johnson in Philly. Keim seems sure they have not made a decision and are going through the process which will involve pro days and private visits before coming to a conclusion
