I think they should pick up his 5th year. He's still young and he's still a good player. I just don't think he's ever going to be a dominant one.

I think the jury is still out on “dominant player”and his talent won him accolades in his rookie year showing he can compete and excel in this league.

But can he recover from injury and play in unison with this dline? I think is the question

Me either . . . don't think he will be close . . . not even close to Sweat's level.

Source (PFT): (https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2023/03/28/ron-rivera-commanders-new-owner-could-be-a-factor-in-chase-youngs-fifth-year-option/)

Rivera told reporters at the league meeting that the Commanders have not yet decided whether to pick up defensive end Chase Young‘s fifth-year option in part because a new owner could be a factor in whether the team is willing to guarantee significant money to Young for the 2024 season.

“It’s a very delicate situation,” Rivera said.

The Commanders’ free agent contracts have been structured in such a way that suggests that Snyder expects to sell the team fairly soon — and that he wants the new owner to be on the hook for the signing bonuses of this year’s free agent class.

The NFL deadline for teams to pick up fifth-year options is May 2, so the Commanders will have to decide fairly soon. But if they do pick up Young’s option, we don’t yet know which owner will be signing his paychecks in 2024.

I think it's a no-brainer. You pick up the option. There is more to lose than there is to gain by not picking it up IMO. I understand the owner situation, but once that is resolved, the only answer is yes.

yes. he's shown enough to warrant it, and not enough to go into BIG CONTRACT talks yet, so it makes sense, and there's no character baggage or red flags, it's just getting past the injury and producing.

Yes. Better to option him now and get at least an extra year on rookie money. If he bombs its a 1 year rental. If he soars you have time to negotiate.

Might end up franchising Sweat after this year and Chase after 2024. And I'm fine with that. The 1st year franchise tag is a valuable tool for teams.

Unless there are concerns about his knee, you absolutely pick up the 5th year.

Agreed. His knee isn’t my main concern even. I just do not think he is the dynamic playmaker we hoped he was. But we have to give him one more chance and I will just hope he learns to be that dynamic player. I just don’t see it happening.
