Chief X_Phackter 09-01-2022, 01:18 PM Believe it or not, Week 1 vs Jacksonville is a Code Red Must Win game.
After that, Week 2 vs the Lions is a Code Red Must Win game.
You couldn't ask for a better start to the season as far as schedules go - a "home" game vs the team with the least wins in the NFL last year, and game 2 vs the other team with the least wins in the NFL last year.
Honestly 1-1 would be unacceptable, 0-2 and heads must roll.

Outside of Wagner, who I dont think would come here ... I dont see any good options on that list.
Myles jack? 37.7 pff last year but Id trust the steelers in thinking hes worth 8M per.

Jordan Hicks signed with the Vikings and has a 3.5m cap hit. That is the sort of mid level contract we should have been looking at. There is a reasonable argument for not spending big dollars on the likes of B.Wagner or trading for Roquan Smith, but a relatively cheap vet was there to be signed.

Hicks (30 yrs old), 1114 snaps, 116 tackles, 4 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, 0 ints, 5 PD
Holcomb (26), 1021 snaps, 142 tackles, 1 sack, 2 ints, 2 FF, 1 TD, 7 PD
Outside of Wagner or trading for Roquan ... there wasnt many options and zero good ones. Maybe Hicks would be a slight improvement but Id rather go with our in house guy all things considered. The youngish guy from NE was a good candidate but he stayed in NE.
Corner? There were good players to be had, and still had.

I am not sure whether Hicks is starting in Minnesota, but as a backup to Holcomb with occaisional snaps in goal line etc he would be light years ahead of the guys we have. Plenty of starting experience. Maybe I am being too optimistic, but making some sort of effort to improve our depth was warranted
As for corner, yeah there are loads of experienced vets out there, not sure whether they want backup work or not.
It is incredible that not only did RR and co not fix the LB depth but they seem to have completely wrecked the CB depth too. It is strange because last year they went out of their way to sign a couple of decent/experienced backup CBs onto the roster. McTyer was injured last year, but played well, still a FA, I wonder if they are expecting him to be declared fit sooner rather than later and taking the opportunity in the mean time to look at the young guys they just claimed

Holy shit a code red in week one. This might be a long season folks.
I see expectations are reasonable as usual
calia 09-01-2022, 03:27 PM I'm not sure the comparison of Hicks to Holcomb is the right one to make -- the relevant one would be Hicks to Bostic or Mayo, as we'd be talking about Hicks (or someone like that) as opposed to one or both of them. I was hoping for Kwon Alexander. Not sure who is out there now that would be of interest.

Between Hicks and Bostic, at this point I'd rather have Bostic. He's no B Wagner, but we were never going to get him, or a similar caliber player anyway. I'm not sure there was another one out there. I think it was B Wagner, then a handful of backups to choose from.
I guess I'm ok with the LB group. They must be pretty confident in Holcomb's ability and Davis' development, and they obviously weren't enamored with any of the other names out there. My guess is if Bostic wasn't released, they probably would have addressed the position in another manner - bringing in someone else, but they know what they are getting in Bostic as he was part of this defense when they were pretty good a couple years ago.

I have higher expectations than most probably. I would be surprised if they don't win at least 10 games. I think Vegas has them winning around 7. I'm absolutely taking the over on that.
To get there though, they cannot afford to lose to the Jags or Lions.
