Jason Wright said from day 1 “we want a name that represents the DC area”

Once he said that the name Redwolves was never in play. They will say “we tried” but we all know better.

Commanders fits the area and no other team has that name in any of the major pro sports.

The nba has the Timberwolves and Warriors.

Baseball has the Braves

Can’t copy those teams.

Be original

How does Commanders fit the majority of fans of the team. Yes there are military Commanders in the dmv, but that small sliver of folks is hardly representative of the area as a whole.

I have been very reluctant to get into this part of the debate. And I want to preface this by saying I have several friends who were in the military, a couple went to Afghanistan, and actually a couple of ex American soldiers, one of whom went to Irak. All great men, great souls, and I have nothing but respect for their courage, and compassion for the deep psychological scars some of them have because of what they went through. My grandfather was a career officer, fought in WW2 and stayed in the military all his life, one of the nicest and full of love human being I've known.

This being said, I have to admit I am a bit perplexed at one thing : everybody (not only here, on Twitter and FB too) is trying to anticipate how any name could become offensive in some way at some point in time, sometimes quite over reaching. I've read Wolves could be seen as a celebration of sex offenders... Don't know if said in good faith or not. We are now thinking the color Red in a name is not 100% safe... And the NFL has a strict policy when it comes to celebrating guns/weapons, Josh Norman was fined a decent amount for his bow and arrow celebration IIRC... But almost nobody seems to think that celebrating the military, hence the war, hence the killing of millions human beings, could one day be seen as somewhat offensive...

I don't want to get into a debate about recent wars and all, but if you're ready to think that somehow Redhawks would be seen as offensive one day, don't you think a name celebrating war wouldn't be that cool at some point in history ?

I understand and respect that honoring the military in the US is a big thing, and, right now, quite consensual... But things evolve, maybe it won't always be the case...

So any team name that is generals ,commanders, defenders, sentinels, admirals. Tuskegee airmen red tail reference , or any other name that can be associated with any military will make any fan or the team in general a war monger?

Maybe the team name means nothing to you, but I liked the native American identity of the team. I have no interest in cheering on the military. None, whatsoever. I have respect for the men and women in the armed forces, but not the institutions themselves. It's worse than trying to consider cheering on the Marlboro's or the McDonald's.

Fair enough .. but the native Americans have no interest in any sports team honoring them .. they made that clear .. even the word Indian is offensive ..The protest Braves games .. I’m sure at some point the Yankees will be offensive .. it’s gonna end up being a state controlled world .. the government will tell you what you can or can’t use as a brand ..

Tuskegee airmen red tail reference , or any other name that can be associated with any military will make any fan or the team in general a war monger?Definitely not. I'm just puzzled that with all the extravagant predictions of how every name could potentially become offensive one day, pretty much everybody seems to be 100% confident that naming a team after war (one of the most horrible things to ever happen to mankind, including to the brave men and women who enrol to fight in it) will never ever be considered offensive.

And just to be clear, my personal feeling is that Commanders is just boring, but I wouldn't really have any issues with a cool military name. Even Warriors was cooler. Somebody jokingly said Privates and I would actually enjoy it more than Commanders. Even Sergents would be funnier to me. Brigade, Squad...

You get the point, I don't have personally a massive issue with a military name. I'm just perplexed at the fact out of all names this would be the one considered the least offensive.

Sent from my Pixel 4 XL using TapatalkI saw your posts, agree with your reasoning and understand your feeling. I am personally not offended by it, but I sure don't feel nearly the same connection with a military officer (pretty high up the chain too) than I did with a Native American theme.
