Curious to see the run numbers.

Seemed we ran right more and we more productive on that side.

It's still early but I am very concerned about the lack of plays CY and Sweat are making.. More so Young because many predicted him to have an Aaron Donald type season... So far his ass has been 70% missing.. Payne and Allen have been the best 2.

I've gone back and watched defensive clips from our first two games, and has noticed Young is often being chipped by either a RB or TE on plays. There are other times he's facing a double-team. He's still a young pup and will have to find a counter.

Payne and, more so, Allen are occasionally being held but not warranting any calls. Allen was held about three times last night but to no avail regarding a flag (once for Payne that I can recall).

It's still early, so I'm not panicking. There's some kinks that needs to be remedied, and if the D can get on track then we're gonna be a tough out. HTTWFT!

Exactly and we don't know how the season will play out.

We always complain we don't get breaks and last night we got all the breaks and folks are bitching. Geez.

We are .500 team this season and really if the defense can be who they are suppose to be that percent could go up.

My Debbie Downer comment:
CY is not doing jack shit; i specifically focused on him at times and he creates very little pressure. Hope he turns it around. Sophomore slump?

We didn’t get all the breaks, that terrible spot by the refs and then the replay not overturning it,cmon wtf,I didn’t even think it was that close of a call where there would be any doubt. We were just lucky we got the 1st down anyway, bit if we didn’t that changes the whole game

I think what's crazy is that the offense can be so much better, that's scary. There's no way we should be out rushed by Danny f*cking Jones when we have Gibson and McKissic. Our team had 87 rushing yard, Jones had 95, that just can't happen.

Back to the TD, yeah that was a sick pass and catch.

It's a passing league now so to me the days of ground and pound and piling up a lot of rushing yards are over. Many of the short passes are basically run plays anyway, so the rushing yardage thing doesn't bother me. How many times did we put up 30 or more last year? Maybe once??

What bothers me is allowing Jones to have 100 yards. Inexcusable. He isn't Lamar Jackson. They looked lost and not prepared for the read option.

I like that were some definite things we wanted to improve on ... and we did.

1. Get Terry looks. He was 11 catches, 107 yds, 1 td on 14 targets. Seond play from LOS was a pass to Terry.

2. Get Thomas and Humphries involved. Thomas 5 catches 7 targets, Humphries 7 catches 8 targets.

3. Jonathan Allen had a monster game against an injured IOL. 6 tackles, 2 sacks, 3 TFL, 3 QB hits. Fed Ex Defensive Player of the Week candidate.

4. Matty I .. good to see he came back and played after that knee scare. Quiet game, credited w 1 tackle.

JA seemed like the only guy last night on the line that was dominant. The rest of them just nothing.

New York Giants
Quarterbacks

Jones had a strong performance against a defense that’s fresh off of a surprisingly impressive 2020 season. In spite of being sacked four times, Jones managed the pocket well enough to push the ball downfield, recording an adjusted completion rate well over 80% while posting an 11-yard average depth of target. In addition, 83% of his yardage came before the catch. Four drops — one on a wide-open touchdown pass — cost him an even better stat line.

The Giants offensive line continues to struggle in the Dave Gettleman era, but center Billy Price was particularly problematic versus Washington, losing matchups against Daron Payne and Jonathan Allen to the tune of a 14% pressure rate allowed. He also allowed a sack. The rest of the unit surrendered nine additional pressures and a second sack.

Defensive Backs

New York rotated in multiple DBs on passing downs to match up with Washington's receiving corps, but starting cornerbacks Adoree' Jackson and James Bradberry performed well, allowing just 83 yards (and two touchdowns) despite being targeted 15 times. Each's average depth of target was beyond eight yards (15 for Jackson), suggesting that they stood up in coverage on deeper and in-breaking routes.

Washington Football Team
Quarterback

Heinicke showed well for a backup quarterback who was making his first start of the season on a short week. His throws didn’t flash quite as bright as Jones', but he managed the game well enough to finish with a 99.5 passer rating. Sixty-seven percent of his throws were short of the sticks, forcing Washington's playmakers to create yardage after the catch. He finished with over 300 yards and converted 14 first downs.

Defensive Line

Washington's young pass-rushing core flashed its potential once again, as the unit was able to affect Jones repeatedly without much action coming from Chase Young (who still had two tackles for loss on the night). Payne and Allen ate up the Giants' interior, combining for 10 pressures and two sacks between their 62 snaps. Montez Sweat is proving to be an ideal secondary rusher, using his combination of length and power to rack up five pressures and a sack against New York.

Defensive Backs

Washington's trio of Benjamin St-Juste, Kendall Fuller and William Jackson III had their hands full all night, giving up 155 yards and a touchdown. Jackson was asked to play more tight one-on-one coverage than his teammates, and though he forced two incompletions, the reps he lost cost the defense two explosive passing gains and a 115 passer rating. His night was spared by two drops while he was the primary coverage defender.

Role reversals. The Giants lost to us in a manner that we seem to always lose to them. When presented with the game on a silver platter, they only ran off 16 seconds of clock and settled for a field goal, leaving us 2 minutes to drive into field goal range. Then they were off-sides on the game-ending field goal miss that gave us another try at it. Feels good.

I agree with this. I think that there must have been some real high expectations for this defense based on some of the utter dismay I have seen with regard to the first two games.

Admittedly, I thought we would see a much better defense than we have thus far, but I still believe this will be a top 10 unit in the end. I mean you couldn't have expected that they were just going to shut opponents down right off the bat - especially with all the new pieces in the secondary. Fuller and Curl are really the only dudes getting significant snaps - who also got significant snaps last year. It's going to take a minute for it to all come together. Maybe it never will...maybe JDR sucks...maybe CY is a bust... I don't think any of that is true, but time will tell.

Either way, they are 1-1, and I'm not panicking after two games.

Given the talent here and the natural assumption they would improve over last year when they were top 5 in a lot of categories, they are seriously underperforming right now. I don't think it's too crazy that fans expected more at this point. Long way to go, but they need to pick it up.
