irish 02-15-2022, 08:22 AM Bears, probably not...but we're not talking about the Bears here.
I'm just saying that no one would spend that kind of money to purchase an NFL franchise - with the intent of changing the name, if they didn't already have the assurance that they could do that.
Would anyone go into the process of purchasing an NFL franchise, including this one, with that intent? Probably not. I think the Commanders is here to stay.
There is 0% chance that part of the purchase agreement is the "option to rename the team". The NFL owns the logos and trademarks, not the team and there's no way the NFL would entertain the chance a name/logo change could occur every time a team changes owners.
irish 02-15-2022, 08:29 AM That is a rather unfair comparison.
An iconic name of an iconic franchise vs a brand new and boring name of a damaged franchise.
If someone bought the Bears and then tried to change their name, their press and fans would crucify him.
In contrast, if someone bought the Commanders and changed the name to <insert your favorite>, he would be nominated for sainthood.
They might be nominated for sainthood right up until they chose a name like River Rats, or Storm Clouds. You are dreaming if you think any owner cares about what team name the fans want. They will work with the NFL to come up with whatever name can get a trademark.
Of course its an unfair comparison but the statement was that whenever someone buys a team they have the ability to change the name because they spent a boatload of of $. That's just not true.

Nobody's talking about all the names/logos changing every time an NFL team changes ownership. This started with the possibility of Snyder being forced out, a new owner coming in, and the question as to whether it is possible that new owner would have any intent on changing the name. I think it is not likely that would happen, but it's probably more than a 0% chance. After all, this team has had three different names in the last three years.

I personally do not believe Danny is going anywhere. I hope I am wrong. So this is all just conjecture.
Having said that, if Snyder is going to be removed, that time is coming soon. Since that time is soon, the paint on anything Commanders is still dry. Throw in that the name is widely considered lackluster.
So, new owner comes in. What better way to kick things off then to ditch this silly name and get a better one? Also serves to relegate the Danny era to the trash heap.
Silly? Sure, a bit. But no sillier than what some other teams have done such as multiple relocations or erecting statues to criminals.
Dreaming? Most certainly. But so is thinking that if the Commanders just get a decent QB, they will flourish, Snyder notwithstanding. The last quarter century clearly disproves that.
Dreams are all we have left my Irish friend. :)
Ruhskins 02-15-2022, 10:25 AM I want an owner that's going to buy the team away from Snyder, stay in the background, sign the checks, and let the business/football people run things. And honestly, that's what everyone should be asking for.

+ 1
A better rename would be the cherry on top. But as I said before, I could live with *Commanders if it came with more enlightened ownership.
* I do get a kick out of Commies.

I would live with them being called the Washington SillyNannies if they start winning.

LOL!
Here, funny anecdote to lighten the mood:
I caught the Rolling Stones at FedEx Field on 7/3/19.
Sir Mick took a break in the middle to do the customary band introductions. When he got to Charlie, he said: "And on the drums, the next mascot of the Washington Redskins, Charlie Watts!"
Clever from a couple of different angles.
Giantone 02-15-2022, 11:38 AM So there are rumors about the Dolphins, some small ones about the Commanders and we know the Bronco's are for sale. Be a heck of a way to get diversity in Ownership around the NFL.
