I wonder if the #1 QB position will be a true competition or will it be gifted to the higher paid QB?
I ask because Taylor Heinicke was playing pretty efficiently in Turner's system. If Heinicke is playing heads and shoulders better than Fitz, does TH get a legit shot to start game 1?

I don't think Fitz would have came here without assurances the starting job would be his to lose.

Ron may talk about a "competition" at least to start off with, but that will be nothing more than coach speak.

It was 1 game. There is no way to draw any kind of conclusion from one game. Fitzmagic is a bonafide NFL QB with a 15 year career. Heinicke has one NFL game in the last two years and that was because WFT was desperate for a QB who knew how the system worked. Unless Fitzmagic gets hurt he is the starter because there is zero chance that Heinicke outplays him.

I think that he will give a reasonable attempt to push the eventual starter through competition. Also, Fitzgerald's money was not in the class of unquestioned starter, it definitely was backup qb pay.

So while I think Fitz starts IF either qb clearly steps up I won't be surprised to see him be a backup.

I think he regrets not having a competition mainly because he knew Dwayne wasn't the guy from the jump. Circumstances are a lot different this year.

I don't think they went sniffing around pretty much every available QB this offseason to bring in a backup. And RF just said yesterday on the Ross Tucker podcast interview the main reason he came here was the opportunity to play... reading the not so subtle tea leaves on what he said he's here to start.

Moreso it is hey you are our starter with reservations.

Nothing about his deal says he is more than a bridge qb just in case we don't find one in training camp or through the draft.

I wouldn't say $10M a year is clear backup money. Dalton just got the same $$ and he's not going to Chicago to be the backup. Clear backup $$ to me is in the ballpark of $2-4M a year, basically what Heinicke is getting.

$10M a year puts them both tied for 19th highest paid in the league for QB's. Not superstar money for sure but not backup either.

It's not really backup money. It's more like low-end starter money. He'll bank more than 13 other projected starters next year. According to Spotrac, Taysom Hill is the only non-starting QB (maybe) that is to make more than Fitz in 2021.

He is a bridge QB, but he's the starter.
