SkinzWin 01-20-2021, 08:50 PM Per this link, Mayhew's focus was primarily on the pro-side of scouting.
https://www.nbcsports.com/bayarea/49ers/nfl-rumors-49ers-exec-martin-mayhew-join-washington-front-office
Hurney - GM
Mayhew - VP of Pro Personel/Scouting
Smith - VP of College Scouting
That would be pretty sweet.
I doubt Mayhew is going to come here as a lateral move. I see it panning out more like this:
Hurney - GM/Ownership babysitter and watchdog
Mayhew - Assistant GM/VP of Pro Personnel/Ownership babysitter and watchdog
Smith - VP of College Scouting

Wouldn't this be a demotion?
Let's be real guys. Given his connections around the league, especially to the coaching staffs of the Rams and 49ers, it's very realistic Smith is out.
I only say this because it's easier to accept when you know it's coming, even if you disagree with it.

That’s what he is now. VP of player personnel. I was dividing out between pro and college. This could go a lot of ways, but I haven’t seen a single report linking Kyle Smith to another team or rumblings about him leaving. He’s young and doesn’t have any GM experience. Staying with WFT and working with two long tenured front office guys is a platform for him to grow into future roles.

I tend to trust JP Finlay on the subject. He has connections inside the building and when he writes things like this (https://www.nbcsports.com/washington/football-team/big-changes-front-office-dont-mean-big-problems-washington-football) I agree with his reasoning.
It's not a matter of Kyle Smith not knowing how to scout. It's not a matter of how well he does his job. It's a matter of Smith being young and Ron preferring experience.

Our Young OC, hired by RR himself, is only 38 years of age. If I do recall, Kyle was promoted since RR came on board.

Yep.
I think the talk of Kyle leaving is a bit premature. He may very well leave between now and the Summer, but he's actually in a good place, so if RR wants him to be part of his team I bet he stays.

He also had a history with our young OC dating back to Carolina.
Warthog 01-21-2021, 04:26 AM I’m disappointed in the GM decision, because he’s older, just ANOTHER guy from Carolina and his record hasn’t been that great.
To me the big decision if how they tend to and pay KYLE SMITH. Increase Kyle’s salary and job title and draft/FA involvement. Perhaps Deputy GM?
Keep him here until he can impress Rivera with his GM skills and perhaps he can move up.

EdmundDorf 01-21-2021, 06:01 AM The impression I got from the local reporters is that Hurney doesn't want to have to deal with the day to day workload of being a GM, which is why Mayhew is here.... and the prospect of him mentoring Kyle may be realistic. Hurney is here to get the organization straight, I would not expect him to be here for more than 2-3 years, but we shall see
KI Skins Fan 01-21-2021, 07:09 AM Welcome home, Martin Mayhew!
Mayhew is one of us. He was a very good starting CB when he played in Washington. He's done some good work as a player personnel executive for some other NFL teams and now I'm happy to have him back with us. I'm not about to pre-judge his ability. I'm just wishing him success and satisfaction in his new position.
