I agree, giving up key players would be one step forward, 1 or 2 steps back. And risk team chemistry as some of these guys are de facto leaders.

Right now, I actually doubt Watson is going anywhere, but I'd start with next 2 1's, 2 3's and go up to 3 x 1's and 3 x 3's. Anything more and we're trashing our ability to draft support around him and bolster the D for the next 3 years. That could defeat the object of bringing him in.

If we're going for it now by trading for Watson, it makes no sense to me to give up a couple of our better players. I'd sweeten the offer by adding more draft picks. Our dline has 6 high value players CY, Allen, Payne, Sweat, Matt I, Settle and if we bring Ryan K back that makes 7
And our backup Smith-Williams seemed capable too. Plus our DC is also a stud.

Our whole offense has 2 and that is a maybe. And our OC clearly needs a competent signal caller for the offense to work.

I would trade Sweat, and Settle
Re-sign Kerrigan and ask for Watt and Watson then work out some balancing draft pick compensation

Chase and 19th pick for Watson ....who would or would not?

I Would!!

Houston wouldn't. And it'll take more than that. Watson is a very good QB, Young looks like he has HOF potential. I'll keep young and draft a QB, Young is 2nd most important position, especially given we'd have to mortgage the future almost as bad as Rams to get him. And again, Houston will sit Watson all year and fine him into oblivion before trading him. Watson is not being traded. We might as well talk about trading for Joe Montana.

I'll trade Elvis' left testicle and Bill Clinton's conscience and our next 11 first rounders. Watson isn't getting traded. Even if he was, price ruinous.

And then we can raid local high school teams to round out our roster since we have no draft picks.

While its a possibility Smith can come back stronger than the start of last season I honestly think its highly doubtful. Had this years injury been to another part of his body maybe, but it was to an already reconstructed calf that already requires artificial support to function. He's past the age of peak physical fitness, so his ability to heal is declining not improving. There's every chance this injury will be recurring and I'd lay odds his consultant has told him so.

While he may think he can compete with the likes of Fitz (who is still quite mobile), the reality is the only advantage he has over any FA we bring in is going to be his brain and possibly his arm. At this point he's less mobile than Rivers, and he just retired.

I can't see Smith lasting more than 1/2 a season without missing game time. You need a better projection for your starter than that.

Smith never won anything in his prime on a stacked KC team which Mahomes promptly led to multiple deep playoff runs and a SB victory. He went 5-1 against mostly losing teams. Stellar human being, but even if you could depend on his leg, he is not a great QB, and you can't depend on his calf. Time to move on and build for future. Heinecke as 3rd QB to compete, and then 2 new QBs hopefully both drafted.

Time to go young and find our own franchise QB via the draft. First four picks LT,QB,CB,WR. FA MLB and FS. Keep building the smart way, the sound way, long term.

But the FO would be derelict if they didn't put together a package that they felt was reasonable/doable and make the offer. Our DL has players we wont re-sign and can use their value to minimize the draft pick compensation. And if Houston is dumb enough to trade Watson (again I don't think they will unless he holds out all season) then we should make an effort to get him. At the least it makes other teams put higher offers out.

Watson is gone, he has said he is 100% done there. The Texans have no choice.. You can play hardball for so long but then the trade value ends up hurting you because you waited so long.
