It’s because he has huge upside. Most thought Mahomes wasn’t good either. Not saying he’s ever going to be that but in today’s QB starved league , guys will always go higher than they should.
Also as Matty will be excited to hear, Cam is staying in NE on a 1 year deal per Rap sheet
QBs will always be overrated and overpaid and some drafted way too early. Not sure why this still surprises some people. People look at Lance and see the next Josh Allen. Small school, big time upside, very raw and will need to be properly developed. He's got the kind of upside that's worth rolling the dice on in the 1st.

Where do QBs come from part 2: https://www.hogshaven.com/2021/3/11/22324936/where-do-quarterbacks-come-from-part-2
Pretty good insight into the failures of the bottom 6 teams over the last decade.
I particularly enjoy the advice to Ron Rivera if he wants Washington to remain in the bottom 6.

For every Josh Allen there are 10 or more Dwayne Haskins.

Of course, doesn't mean you stop rolling the dice though. If you hit you can hit big.

That’s what I have always said. In fact I’d draft 2 QBs this year if you have to. Yeah I roll the dice but if you don’t even try what’s the point?

My prediction for the WFT QB derby in 2021:
1. Taylor Heinicke will compete for the #1 QB position in TC with Allen. Taylor is the plan for 2021.
2. Kyle Allen will probably be the backup
3. The WFT may trade a mid-draft pick of 2022 for a BACKUP QB from maybe the Packers or some other team. A young guy to add to the competition.
What this does for the team. The WFT can use the draft and FA to fix some of their Big HOLES:
FA: WR, LB, S , TE in that order.
Premiere WR to balance against McLaurin. This will open up the offense. Big bucks.
A very good LB: an all around, very good LB who can stay with the TE, WR and stop the run. Medium cost
A good S in case Collins sucks. Lower cost
Draft: drafting for the OL to protect Heinicke
First Round: OT best available. Time to get youth and power into the OL.
Second round: CB or TE
Third Round: OG - to replace Scherff if a long-term deal can’t be worked out.

I feel like the biggest hole is QB. RR made it clear after the season that the QB position is “one of the most important things that we need to get done and get established”. They have made it clear that they want to upgrade at QB, and have they already shown that they are pursuing other options, so I don't think they begin the season with TH and KA battling it out.

They are obviously trying to get an upgrade at QB (hence the Stafford offer), but I also think they won't overpay via trade (DW, RW) nor trade up in the draft, so it leaves them with only second tier options that might not be massive upgrades over TH and KA. I could see a trade for Darnold but that's about it.

Unless they move up for Fields or Lance it’s definitely looking like they’ll roll with a FA Like Mariota or as mentioned trading for Darnold.
Best case scenario is The Jets keep Sam and Atlanta doesn’t draft a QB. If those happen, the QBs will fall some.
