The best thing for Houston is to take the 3 number 1 draft picks they'll likely get (along with any other picks) and rebuild. As Bruce Allen showed (at our expense) it is foolish to insist on keeping a marquee player, that doesn't want to play with your team anymore.
Watson is a 25 year old elite QB, who has the luxury of sitting for a season if the Texans play hardball with him. I'm pretty sure the Texans will change their tune as we get closer to the draft.
Technically they could put him on ice for 8 years. His 5 year deal and three franchise tags. THAT would be hardball...

They can, but why would they want to do that? They could easily rebuild and be competitive in 2-3 years with haul of draft picks they would get from trading Watson.

Now that Watson and Carr (reports are he is staying in LV another yr) are out of the mix. Here is my updated wish list / rankings
1. Justin Fields - I think he fits the offense better than any FA QB left. Can start right away
2. Trey Lance - Similar to Fields but he's not ready to play yet
3. Sam Darnold - Reports are the Jets are not sold on trading him just yet so we'll see how that pans out.
4. Zach Wilson - 1 year wonder but kid can sling it
5.Mac Jones - Damn good pocket passer, accurate , decent arm. Quick release. Just slow as a turtle lol
6. Mariota - If he is traded for a 5th I'm cool with it
7. Cam - He says he'd be open to playing in WSH, he's not very good anymore so I'm not a big fan of the move if he comes but I won't Hate it either.
Thoughts?

If we could get Fields we would be set at QB for the next decade. But I do not see any way we could get hm without at least trading up to Number 3 in the draft.

I'd swap Cam for Fitzpatrick. If all else fails with the QB hunt I think he'd be a good stop gap.

I wouldn't trade up for any QB in this draft (except Lawrence).

I hate to rely on the draft to get a late first round qb. Pick up a free agent not named Cam. Have a real competition and keep your scouts and eyes peeled for a 2nd thru 4th round talent.

My issue with Fitzpatrick is he has been Jekyll and Hyde throughout his career. He had a career year in Buffalo under OC Chan Gailey and Gailey was the OC for Miami last year. I do like Fitzpatrick in general but I wouldn't feel 100% confident in him if we sign him - I think he will help us win some games and I also think he will lose some games for us because of his turnovers. Although given the limited options, I would not oppose to signing Fitzpatrick if we aren't able to draft a rookie QB that is ready to play immediately.

If we're going the free agent stop gap route, I still say Tyrod Taylor is a better option than Ryan Fitzpatrick. He is 7 years younger, more mobile, and turns the ball over half as much.

The thing I like with Fitzpatrick over Taylor is he pushes the ball down the field and takes chances. Taylor is more of a game manager, dump the ball down kind of guy.
