hagams 01-14-2021, 04:18 PM In Ron we trust! I honestly think we have the right man at the helm heading into the off-season. Whatever decision Ron makes, I'm onboard. The Kool-aide is tasting good again!
Here's my take on our QB options:
Draft: Don't draft an early round QB. I don't think we will get who we want (or need) at 19, and I don't think moving up will prove to be worth it. We can get the best QB out of the draft, but would you trust them behind our patchwork O-line (granted, it came together as the season went on)? I would prefer to shore up our line via the first few rounds of the draft, and find an answer at QB. I'm cautious about taking a QB early, especially considering recent 1st round QB's:

Trade options: Since everyone has already touched on trading for Ryan, Stafford, and Watson, I'll leave them alone. I mentioned it in another thread, but the Bills still have Jake Fromm (Georgia) sitting on their practice squad. Now that Allen has exploded, they may devalue him. They picked him up in the 3rd round, so it should cost much to pull it off. Head into camp with Heinicke, Sweat, and Fromm. That's three hungry QB's, and we should be able to find our starter there. Maybe even keep Alex around as a mentor OR an assistant QB coach.
These are good times we are living in skin fans.
Monkeydad 01-14-2021, 04:46 PM ^ I'd rather see Montez Sweat on defense.
skinsfan69 01-14-2021, 06:10 PM We are too far back to get one of the top guys. Idk about Fields. He is too boom or bust imo. One game he is clearly better than Lawrence, the next he looks like a mid round project. That is really going to a big risk taking him in the top 5. If he is there at 19 it's going to be a tough decision. Mac Jones is the NFL backup that can come in and hold the fort down but not a 16 game starter.
Like a lot have said Heinike comes back and I also bring back Allen. Alex retires. The Stafford talk I think is just that. I think he stays put simply cause their new coach will probably want to keep him. Just watching him against us he still is an elite thrower/passer. You give him a line and weapons and he can still put up 5,000 yards. Why would you trade him? Who is going to give up a ton for a QB in his 30's? Just don't see it.
skinsfan69 01-14-2021, 06:40 PM Watson - Full on boner. I'd gladly give half our draft for him (even the good half).
Stafford - Definite chub. I'd trade our 1st for him.
Lawrence, Fields, Wilson, Lance, Jones - I'd be controlled excited, not falling in love with a rookie QB
we would all love Watson but he isnt coming here. we don't have enough draft capital to trade for him.
skinsfaninok 01-14-2021, 07:32 PM You need a guy that you can trust week in and week out to get the job done. Right now we don’t have that guy, TH had a great game but it’s one game. He’s 27 (28 this year) and hasn’t done anything until the Bucs game. That’s hard to roll with as QB1. Not to mention he got hurt diving for a Td.
Watson isn’t going to be traded unless it’s Miami, he said that’s where he wants to go (well his team said that)
Unless we trade for Stafford or some how sign Dak, it’s going to be a vet option like Mariota or Carr if he’s let go.

If Ron likes one of the top guys enough we could always trade up if one of them falls a few spots past where people thought they’d go. Every year you know there’s some team (or a couple that make a surprise, squirrelly pick). If we can trade up from 19 into the teens if a guy falls, I see that being a possibility.

When I first heard the name pop-up, I was against Mariota. But he would be a great fit for our offense. I wouldn't mind rolling with him/Heinicke/Allen next year, and building up the rest of the team through FA/draft.

Are we talking about a Ryan Tannehill type career resurrection?

This is an idea I like a lot. We would have three decent QB's competing for playing time next year, all of whom can fit our offense and we'll also be covered for any injuries at the position. That's a good thing.
Next season will be only the second year of our team build. There is no reason to throw away cap space on a FA or draft capital on a rookie QB. We can wait to land our "franchise" QB.
AnonEmouse 01-15-2021, 12:50 PM Only caution I have is Mariota had a good coaching structure in Tenn and was average. Just look at what they've done with Tannehill, who was pretty much wasted under Gase. Mariota was above average in 3.5 of 5 seasons with the Titans and benched in favour of Tannehill who then took off. Same systems different results and at least 1 season with the same weapons. I personally wonder if Mariota peaked after season 2 and we'd actually get sub par Mariota from his last 4 seasons? I certainly wouldn't pay him #1 money to come here, not to start with.
