Thoughts on Mariota?
He's no better than some of the QBs that can be had in free agency. Definitely not giving anything up for him.

Seems like the options are getting limited.
Really there's only one QB that is off the table - Stafford. There are plenty of "options" out there, just have to be smart about what you are willing to part with to make a deal. So far it appears that they are taking the measured approach they said they would, and are asking the questions, but are not willing to give up more than what they perceive the value to be. Thank goodness.
I would overpay for Watson (he's the only one), but the jury is still out on whether or not he is going to hit the trade market. However, I still think they can upgrade the QB position in free agency without giving up assets. There are probably 3-4 free agent QBs who would be an upgrade compared to what was on the field last year. I say let the other QB needy teams fight over Wentz, Carr, Darnold, Bridgewater, Foles, etc. and then when free agency hits they won't have to overpay "as much" for one of those guys.
These potential trade targets aren't markedly better than what you can get in free agency in my opinion.

Carr was worth bidding over- not available.
Dak- for sure.
Watson is worth a boatload.
Stafford was worth a strong offer as well.
After them, I lose interest quickly. Who else would give you confidence? Who else? As much as there are many QBs that may be available, the reality seems different.

Thoughts on Mariota?
I’ve dogged him on these boards previously, but after a deeper dive, not terrible career stats:
77 TDs (Alex Smith 199)
45 INTs (Alex Smith 109)
2.5 INT % (Alex Smith 2.1)
62.9 Completion % (Alex Smith 62.6)
89.5 QB Rating (Alex Smith 86.9)
209.9 Yards Per Game (Alex Smith 204.9)
He’s basically a younger Alex Smith in the role of Game Manager. He’s also never started a full season, never playing more than 15 games in a season (2016 and 2017) so durability is an issue. I wouldn’t give more than a 5th round pick. Mobility only gets you so far.

Why do that though when you can just get a game manager in free agency?

I would love to add Mariota to our team. He would be an excellent pairing with Heineke because they have very similar styles and skill sets. The offense could be tailored to fit the two of them to maximize our ability to move the ball and score. The very real threat of their running gives the opposing D's more to prepare for then they would have to do to to stop a pocket passer. If the starter is injured in a game nothing changes on offense when the backup comes in. Same plays. Same skillset. Same productivity.

MM has better size and prob better arm talent so I'd say he'd be the QB1 but I agree with this.

I 100% wouldn't want Marcus Mariota here.

I certainly wouldn't mind this either if no better options become available. Having a more mobile QB would hopefully improve our run game as well. If our D improves more next season, we could strive to be where the 49ers were season before last.
