Redskins247 03-09-2021, 09:56 AM If I'm BS unless I get a ton of guaranteed $$ in a LT offer I'm playing under the tag this year, collecting my $18M guaranteed, and hitting free agency next year for another bite at the apple. I think we just blew our shot at getting a long term deal done.
Yep. Kirk Cousins part 2. Very disappointing.

Agreed. He doesn't owe Ron shit, so why would he sign anything less than a monster contract ?
Chief X_Phackter 03-09-2021, 10:04 AM Unless they plan on making a massive FA splash and try to be a contender, tagging Scherff makes zero sense IMO

Why would they not try to be a contender? Of course it all revolves around what happens at QB, but I think that's the point - be a contender.
Tagging Scherff isn't the most popular or ideal scenario, but next to McLaurin he is currently your best player on offense. He solidifies that right side, making Moses and Roullier better, and was the best player on the 6th best offensive line in the NFL. Sure, a long term deal would have been better (and still would be), but I don't think they could just let him walk.
They could still get a deal done that reduces this year's cap hit, but it takes both sides. He may be happy taking his 18mil and walking next year. Unfortunately, that's the game...

Yep.
I guess at this point you hope to get one more quality season out of him, and he walks next year going on age 31 having played his best 7 seasons here. For Brandon with the potential for a big bump in the cap next year he has little incentive to get a long term deal done now that he has $18M in his pocket.
SunnySide 03-09-2021, 10:36 AM What this random know nothing fan would have done
- offered him 4 yrs/62M/45 guar
- let him explore other offers, we leave the 4/62 on table for him and he gives us right to match any offer (or transition tag him)
- He realizes with shrinking cap and flood of good guards, our offer is best and he signs it
- He finds a better offer, we dont match, we sign a good FA guard for 5-8M, collect our 3rd R comp
---
He didnt sign his tag until March 31 last year .. maybe we find a better option in FA on march 17th and pull the tag.
Not a fan of paying a guard 18 M plus, especially a guard who is just outside the top 5 guards

He would be an I D I O T if he doesn't sign that thing when he first wakes up this morning, if he hasn't already signed it.

That would've been the logical choice for me too. He's worthy of another 4 year stretch but any longer and I would've been hesitant.

Different situation IMO:
- BS probably wants to play here if he gets the right deal.
- If there is an opportunity to trade BS, I think this team makes it happen and will not stubbornly keep him.
- I'm probably being picky here, but I think Kirk was in his prime when his situation happened. I would say BS is slightly past his prime.

This. I think this all but guarantees he never signs long term contract here. Just going to extract 1 more prime year out of him and let him walk hopefully.
