Coronavirus stimulus: Extending extra unemployment benefits through executive order 'would really be a nightmare'

President Trump signed several executive orders to address various issues related to the coronavirus pandemic after negotiations with Congressional Democrats over a new stimulus bill fell apart.

The immediate implications of the executive orders are unclear, and the unilateral route may be particularly messy when it comes to extending extra unemployment insurance (UI) benefits that expired after July.

“An executive order [on extra unemployment benefits] would really be a nightmare,” Michele Evermore, senior policy analyst at the National Employment Law Project, told Yahoo Money. “It would just end up resulting in people thinking they're getting a benefit but states being unable to figure out how to do it in many cases.”

“States would have to set up a whole different system to pay out that piece of benefits,” Evermore explained. “I've heard from state agencies that getting the money this way would be difficult, if not impossible, to administer.”

President Trump told reporters on Friday that he would extend the benefits through the end of the year through executive action but didn’t specify whether he would extend the now-expired $600 provided by the CARES Act or cut the extra benefits (as Republicans previously proposed).

On Saturday, Trump claimed that one of his executive orders would implement $400 in extra weekly unemployment benefits until the end of the year, though it’s not clear if or when that would happen.

I could shoot someone in the middle of the street and they would still vote for me

Rings true on the other side as well I guess

It does. Biden could shoot someone in the middle of 5th avenue and only way my vote would change is if the independent became the front runner.

Sorry not sorry. The public standard to get a criminal conviction for anyone that isn't the president was met a long time ago. He has used his office to shield himself from his criminal behavior. If he wins again the statute of limitations comes into play.

Executive orders are absolute bullshit to me in 99% of cases. Let's just keep that same passion when Democrats do them. It's like a video game cheat code. Both sides are fucking immature. I think since Bush 2 through now it's got to the point where all Americans should be absolutely fucking embarrassed.

Give Mooby and me a weekend with unlimited beer, and hard alcohol of his choice, and I think we could hammer something out in 48 hours.

Congress on both sides are petulant children. If I don't get my way 100% I'll throw a temper tantrum.

Beer for me nowadays, too many times I made an ass out of myself getting sloppy drunk as a teenager and in my 20's, now I just get a sixer of Heineken and settle into a nice buzz so I don't have to wait all night to be sober enough to drive home.

I just don't understand why both sides are unwilling to make enough concessions to hammer out a deal. They both look incompetent in times like these when American lives are at stake.

Just beer works for me. Didn't know your preference.

In terms of what I put in bold, its only getting worse, with no end in sight. And Trump clearly isn't helping, but this started before him.

Specifically to 2020, he is definitely part of the problem, but Congress is at least as bad to me. A bunch of assholes.

We need term limits. I'd agree to damn near anything someone on the left offered if that could become a thing.

DC isn't about doing what's best for all of us, it's about doing what's best for them to get re-elected.

This.

+1 on term limits too. I also think they need to put strict rules on taking any job in any industry you passed legislation on post-Congress career and they need to ban owning stocks. Seems like there's a lot of areas nowadays where they used to go by the honor code on and since nobody follows the honor code anymore the legislation isn't there to keep people from using their position in Congress to enrich themselves.

There isn't 1 word or punctuation mark I disagree with here. This is a huge problem. Vote for things to benefit X company, then outside of office get directly hired by X company or get backwater benefits. Absolutely sickening and disgusting. Get a real fucking job like the people you "represent" have to have to put food on the table.
