Not sure if this has been reported, but league sources have told me that they expect the Redskins to franchise tag Brandon Scherff and the Steelers to tag Bud Dupree.

^^^

If that's the case, now that Smithers is gone, hopefully that this is just to extend the time to negotiate an actual contract.

Seriously though..... if you look at the "well run" teams, recently the MO is to get them signed or to tag and trade them, if they don't like him well enough by now to sign him to the deal he wants it is unlikely that they will meet his demands...... depends on how much they like Wes Martin I would suppose, with Trent looking doubtful to return maybe they go into a genuine rebuild mode, hence the desire to trade down with Miami in the draft. Smithers would have tagged him and then sat on his rights in the confidence that he will cave eventually, look how that worked out with Trent.

The intent is to get him re-signed.

Tag sounds good to me. 2019 tag for O Lineman (there is no distinction for G v LT) was 14M last year so Im guessing 15M this year.

Have until July 15 to agree to a LTD.

let him play at 15M, see if he can stay healthy and have a bounce back year.

---------------------

Cheap semi young possibility as a TE2 or TE3. More blocking TE than catching but he had promise at one time.

Nick OLeary, 28 yrs old, played for Jags last year.

JP Holtz will be an ERFA

That's not what they did with Trent. They signed him to a front-loaded deal and he reneged when he got to the 2 back-end years. Completely different situation.

I either read or heard somewhere in the last few days that if they tag Scherff it would be just over $16 million.

I just read that as well .... and that officially the tag amounts wont be known until the CBA is done?

Seems like he wants 14-17M a year AAV anyway ... Id say tag him, if you cant get a reasonable LTD done, let him play this year and prove that he can stay healthy and bonce back.

I love Scherff and want us to keep our young, good, high draft pick players .... but paying Gs over 12M kinda goes against my own personal philosophy. Certain positions I think you dont need elite talent at elite contracts to do well. RB, G, SS are the 3 at the top of my list. TE used to be in that list but nowadays it seems you need a dual 3 down TE.

You are of course right but my point was that we all realise it was always about money with Trent, Bruce knew that but didn't want to pay him a top of the market deal (and for the record I don't think he is worth $20m aav) and rather than trade him while he had value he chose to make it a personal battle of wills.... whether a player overates his value or not, front offices have a pretty good idea where the market will be set a couple of years ahead of time, and they should already have a pretty good idea whether they think the guy is worth it, if not they should trade the player like Seattle and Kansas City have done recently when tagging players
