First to say Alex was propped up by the run...certainly it was a major help, but the defense?

KC was one of the worst pass defenses in the league and wasn’t much better against the run. Alex play bailed out your defense...not the other way around. That’s a big oversight.

Alex smith’s play this upcoming season won’t be the reason Skins struggle...just like cousins wasn’t the reason the team struggled this past year.

We didn’t take a big step back at the qb position with Alex smith.

Good luck this season...

A lot of those comments by Visitor are true of Smith’s play in 2016 and years prior, but were certainly not true last year on the whole. The GIF was taken from a game in 2017 when KC hit the skids there in the middle of the season - his protection broke down frequently and yes he certainly missed some plays that game. You can see in the GIF he flushed right as he felt 92 James Harrison leave Kelce and rush the passer. If he stood in there and took the shot he could have hit the wide open deep post before the hit from Harrison. But his protection failed him that game and you can tell he got jumpy.

But later in the season as the Chiefs offense regained its footing and protected him better he got hot again. By the end of the season he had a Pro Bowl berth and led the NFL in a lot of categories.

It bodes well for him as a Redskin, because for all the Redskins’ problems with running the ball consistently, the one thing anybody will tell you is they can pass protect with the best of them. As Jay adds some of the RPO stuff Smith did in KC, it’s easy to see how Smith will enjoy a comfortable pocket. He’ll have as good a chance as anybody to deliver from a clean pocket.

Agree with most being said.

About that:

... When plays break down, he isnt the type to be able to make something out of nothing. If a play doesnt go exactly as plans, far more often than not, its a completely failed play. ...

I'd say it was one of the big critics made about Kirk (even if he had to improved a little bit last year behind a depleted OL), so I don't think it will be a drop off... I even think, from what I saw, Alex Smith's athleticism allows him to extend plays in the Redzone better than Kirk.

I’m sure we’ll somehow survive going from Cousins to Smith.

Smith is consistent, his stats don't lie.. Last yr was an unusual career yr for him.. I'd expect the same Alex Smith we've always seen, 24 TDs 10 INTS. His WINS
Are the only thing I care about.

Nice break down KC; I think lot of us are not expecting Alex to bring Redskins to super bowl single handedly although I think Alex will be good fit for Gruden's system. Offense won't be issue for Redskins this season, unless we f*cked up with RB situation again.

Its literally all about the run game this season. If we don't improve it big time then its gonna be bad.

That's why we need G/RB over DB :) No but seriously if AS has to pass 40 times a game we won't win much

I agree, I am kinda anxious about draft this weekend. I'm really curious to see what Redskins' strategy is.. Losing 3rd round pick hurts so I can see Redskins making some trades to move back and up eventually.

Bypassing a talented DB just to fill in a need is not good way to go, IMO.. Swearinger is on 2nd year of 3 years contract. We will need someone to fill in Swearinger if and when he signs with different team. Also, Moreau is unknown, Dunbar is still growing and Norman isn't getting any younger. NFL is passing league so we cannot have enough good DBs. Improvements in offense will be moot if we cannot stop other teams from scoring on us.

...... Alex was carried by great running games and strong defenses that I worry will not be able to carry him in Washington.

Good luck to you guys.

This was on my mind the first time I head about us getting Alex Smith.
At this point we do not have a strong running game and we are missing a starting caliber LG and have a very inexperienced Center. There is a chance we not will see the same 2017 Alex Smith in 2018.
Alex is being thrown into a much different situation then he had in KC.
This needs to be addressed.
