BaltimoreSkins 01-31-2018, 10:51 PM When it comes to crunch time, statistics would say that is a lie. Exhibit A, comparative data from the last three seasons. Smith is better in EVERY category except one. Not by a ton, but better nonetheless.

Yet KC had more 4 quarter come backs over the last three years (7 to 5). looking exclusively at the 4th quarter is ignoring the other three quarters. They are pretty comparable over the last 5 years except Alex Smith has a better interception% and is a better runner. I wonder if Gruden is going to try to make AS fit his system or cater to his strength. Listened to an interesting interview with Andy Benoit (from MMQB) on Grant and Danny and he voiced that as a potential problem.

There's not as much of an opportunity to be in situations where a comeback is needed to win when you play with a dominant defense. This stat is meaningless.
BaltimoreSkins 01-31-2018, 11:14 PM I guess that was my point to the 4th quarter meaningless stats posted, anyone can pick and choose stats to fit their narrative.
EARTHQUAKE2689 01-31-2018, 11:19 PM So I have had 24 hours to let this marinate and I have gone through a range of emotions, first I was shocked, not that we got a new QB, because I think deep down we all knew Cousins didn't want to be here and wasn't coming back, I was more shocked because I didn't think Alex Smith was on our radar.
Then, I went to fear when I heard the initial reports were players and picks. I was relieved that it was just a 3rd round pick because as angry as people want to be, Smith's production is worth a 3rd round pick, there is no disputing that. Even at 33 years old.
I got angry when I found out it was Kendall Fuller who was involved because he was far and away our best defensive player to me from what I saw but at the end of the day he isn't Jalen Ramsey, or Xavier Rhodes, or even Josh Norman yet. (Could he get there? possibly but QB>>>>CB any day of the week.)
So once I woke up I started looking at it more and more, Alex Smith has gotten better and better every year, doesn't turn the ball over and one thing no one is mentioning, he beat both teams who are in the Super Bowl this year.
Before I can fully judge this, I want to see the team that is built around Smith, we do need a RB, need more from Doctson, and Reed does need to stay healthy but until I see the season unfold can't really say anything definitive. All I know is that at WORST case scenario Cousins vs. Smith is a wash, but difference is we will be able to get more pieces with Smith vs. Cousins at 30 million or whatever the hell he gets and doesn't want to be here.
Just remember before all of you jump off a cliff, Cousins DID NOT want to be here anymore. You can say we fucked it up, you can say we should have accepted his offer 3 years ago, the point is it is over and we can't go back.

Ask Tom Brady if 4th quarter comebacks are a meaningless stat. He does it all the time and is one of the greatest ever, with multiple championships to prove it. I don't understand how the stat is meaningless. If you can't perform in crunch time, then you aren't going to go far.
And I specifically chose those three stats because I feel like they are the most critical. Cousins is better with overall yardage and TDs, but to me they are less important than what you do in the red zone, the 4th quarter, and when you are playing from behind.

My point all long through this thread has been we were smart not to offer Cousins a big money long term deal because even though he can put up good stats, he has never had the capability to win when it matters (red zone and 4th quarter), and that fact by itself led me to believe he wouldn't ever take us deep in the playoffs.

Well said
sdskinsfan2001 02-01-2018, 12:03 AM Cousins couldn't beat the Cowboys or Giants. Paying 28 million or whatever, to a qb who can't beat teams in your division is a very risky gamble and we avoided it.
Alex, beat the damn Cowboys.
Way more excited about free agency and draft now.
calia 02-01-2018, 12:40 AM Losing Fuller hurts. Was it really necessary? It isn’t exactly an area of need for the Chiefs. Could they have offered someone else and still done the deal? We will never know. But there are only a handful of guys on either side of the ball I would have said “do not trade” and Fuller was one of them. (I would also have said Silverback, Moses, and Scherff on offense, and Kerrigan, Norman, Smith, Ioniddis, and Allen on defense) young talent (except arguably Kerrigan) that could help us win for a long time. Sigh.
I like Alex Smith a lot - a good, hardworking dude (I think he lives near me too). I hope he continues the upward trend.

SFREDSKIN 02-01-2018, 12:50 AM By the way, the Redskins got fleeced big time. The 49ers gave up a 2nd rounder for Jimmy G. Redskin gave Fuller and 3rd rounder. Jimmy G. Will be a much better QB than Smith, book that.
