I agree 100% with Schneed and others who have pointed out that Gruden isn't necessarily holding us back, but he isn't exactly moving forward either.

he really is just an 8-8 kind of coach. He might get hot at the right time and you go 10-6, but i think he is absolutely middle of the road. He will never take the team and make it better, just sort of maintain the natural 8-8 equilibrium. Question is, does Snyder let him finish out his extension going 7-9, 8-8, 6-10, etc....

I dont think he is even middle of the road. If, for example, Gruden and every other coach in the league had the same exact team playing each other so it all came down to coaching that he would get schooled every day and twice on Sunday. He doesn’t have the chops. Time to move on.

Problem is if you fire Gruden who do they hire? You can not get an elite or upcoming coach to come here. Anyone associated w/ the Pats like Vrabel or McDaniels would never come here. Harbaugh would lol if Allen called him. It would have be someone who's crossed paths w/ Allen. Basically another Tampa reject or perhaps Callahan.

There are only 32 HC jobs in the league, if someone wants to be a HC, I don't see too many people turning down the job, especially since we are starting to accumulate some real talent. Talent wise, this will easily be one of the better jobs if Gruden is canned.

Yep. This is what people are failing to understand. Who the hell wants to come to Washington when they know they're on a short leash? Look, like it or not, the Redskins franchise has a bit of a reputation for not being the best organization to work for. Whether if that is the case or not, that's the reputation. The sports media pushes that idea, and I'm sure there are groups within the NFL who push that idea. So having said that, if you stick with the same formula of letting a coach go after three or four seasons, just like all the others, then in the eyes of the sports media, in the eyes of other coaches in the league, they see Washington as a place with the least amount of job security. They see Washington as a franchise with a meddlesome owner and a dysfunctional front office. They see it as a place where coaches are always on the hot seat, and coaches are never successful.

Looking at the Eagles, the Chiefs (who are struggling right now by the way), the Rams, and the Vikings, none of those teams have the reputation like the Redskins. Any issues they may have had with the front office were isolated issues that have been corrected. And that correction hasn't just been, simply, the coach. The Redskins continue to have issues and have so since 2001. Simply put, this organization has long past the glory years, and you can't go back and cling to those years and say this is still one of the best franchises to work for, because that is simply not true. It hasn't been true since Jack Kent Cooke died. If, honestly, it was all about going out and getting the best coaching staff for this organization, we would have already done that by now. There's a lot more to the story than simply the coaches. It's all connected. A coach can't become a great coach with a shitty front office. The front office looks horrible with a poorly coached team. The whole organization looks horrible when the ownership is horrible. In my opinion, fixing the front office (like we thought we had done with Scot McCloughan) goes a very long way. If you have the right GM in there that loads your team up with talent, and your coach is only good for 9 wins a season, then it's the coach. But you cannot say this team was loaded with talent. It has a lot of talent on the team, but no depth. The offense is a shell of what it was last year. The defense shows promise but still has a lot of holes to be filled. There's no depth on this team. Those are all front office issues.

If you want a savior coach to come in and bring championships to this club, you've gotta make it an attractive place for him to come and coach. That starts with showing the current guy that you're giving him every chance in the book to prove himself. Right now, the current guy has 6 more games left in his 4th year. Things might be a lot more rosey by the end of the season.

As JR said last week the power rankings are fool's gold and click bait, and to prove it they continually say stupid things. for example here is this week's blurb:

15. Washington Redskins (4-6, LW: 14)
What a crushing loss. Blowing a 15-point lead with less than six minutes left is really hard to do, and the Redskins also lost running back Chris Thompson to a leg injury. At least Samaje Perine had a breakthrough game. Now that the season is practically over, the focus turns to Kirk Cousins and what happens with his impending free agency.

___

6 weeks left, and the focus turns to impending FA. UGH

Oh why didn’t you say so. I nominate Edna Fisher. My 90 year old neighbor. She just got a new hip and is ready to go!

The Skins are a prime coaching job. Most coaches have enough of an ego to think that they can come in and make a winner whereever they go. And people who say that Snyder has coaches on a short leash is living in the 2000-2010 world. Since 2004 we have had 4 coaches: JG who retired(64 games), Zorn who demolished the team JG built (32 games), Shanahan(64 games), Gruden (48 games). Zorn was an obvious fire, Shanahan obviously blew up on both sides, and now Gruden.

Further, other than the pick of Doctson, I think that Gruden would say that the FO has given him any player he wanted, except maybe for the handwringing around RGIII.

I am not a proponent of firing JGruden after 3 positive seasons, but if and when we move on from him, there will be good candidates getting their resumes in.
