Kirk Cousins 365 thread

If they tag him, you might as well figure he's gone, this year or next it won't matter. If they can't in their mind justify a long term deal off his body of work before Feb 28th, nothing will change between now and July.

I want to ask what is probably the dumbest question in the world, but I am really unfamiliar with the tags and how they work, so let me ask you:

If the Redskins still aren't sure about whether or not to tag him / trade him / release him, etc., by March 1, does that mean that Cousins fully enters into FA and then at that point could be signed by any team for any amount that they offer him?

I agree to a certain extent.

How sure are we that this is not happening: they want him here long term, but are not sure they want to pay the price he's asking, they think tagging him will buy them some time to negotiate, and might eventually end up paying him what he wants before the end of next season ?

I think the tag would give even more leverage to Kirk, but the possibility that they realize they don't really have a choice still exists.

Me too, I'm over it. If Kirk wants to be here then he will sign a Long deal, if not and he is tagged, we might as well trade him if possible. He will walk after next season otherwise. I saw the same shit from KD last summer, Kirk wont be a Redskin much longer, call me negative nancy but I just have that gut feeling.

I kind of feel the same way. Snyder and Allen suck at running a team and don't know shit about what it truly takes to build one. Allen says "it's not that complicated" but there has been no movement. Should have and could have gotten a deal done last year but failed to do so. And tired of KC whining about going "where I'm wanted" talk. I feel like he could have sealed this with better play the few weeks of the season. Instead he played scared against the Giants.

I do feel the Redskins are at a disadvantage and might just have to overpay on this one. If you have to go to 23 or 24 million a year then just do it and get the deal done. WTF are your other alternatives at this point?

What really bothers me most is Allen and Snyder will go out and overpay free agents, they'll overpay Jason Hatcher and Andre Roberts. They'll overpay for Josh Norman but won't do so for their starting QB? Makes no sense to me at all..

Yes and with caveats. March 1st is the deadline for signing franchise tags. Depending on which tag Cousins gets will determine if other teams are allowed to negotiate with Cousins or not. If it's the exclusive tag, no other teams can negotiate with Cousins and we pretty much are guaranteed to have Kirk Cousins through the 2017 season. If it's the nonexclusive, then other teams can negotiate and offer a contract, but the Redskins have the option to match. If they don't match the offer, then Cousins can sign with another team but that team gives up two first round draft picks.

Question: if not cousins, then who do you want as the QB next year?

1. Watson
2. Jimmy Garoppolo
3. McCoy
4. Romo
5. Cutler
6. Tribesky or the kid from Notre Dame
7. Alex Smith if cut by the Chiefs
8. Other, then who?

Bottom line. They have to tag him or sign him by March 1st. If they do neither, he is a free agent and we would get at best a 3rd round compensatory, but they will do one or the other before the March 1st deadline.

At the point they tag him, they give KC a 33Million dollar (next year's tag number) reason not to sign a long term deal. Plus they would all but confirm he can't do enough to win the whole FO over, so there would be no way he signs any long term deal before next offseason. If they tag him, my expectation is that they will be looking to trade him. Maybe that's their plan, but I still stick to my prediction that they sign him to a 6 year deal by this Thursday.

I would like your prediction to come true. I am crossing my fingers and toes. I think it would be a colossal mistake for them to F this up and not get a deal done.

If they do get a deal done, do you think they would then use the franchise tag on Garcon or Jackson?

Still the only thing that makes sense if we have turned the corner to being a football first franchise is a longterm deal. If that's what it's going to be, it ought to be done this week. I know deadlines make deals, but at this point you want to have his contract settled so you go into FA with a plan unhindered by speculation. We also have other contracts we ought to get done before the start of FA as well.

I'm starting to feel that a franchise tag means that Cousins is most likely gone. Because I have a feeling the Redskins have a trade partner already lined up. While it's somewhat possible that the 'skins might be doing this in hopes other teams will offer Cousins a lowball contract, I doubt this will work. If he doesn't sign a contract this week, I will almost bet Cousins won't be a Redskin after 2017.

Alex Smith could be a very likely possibility since he was a McCloughan pick. I would be OK with Smith as a stop gap (can't believe we're talking about stop gap quarterbacks!) He's proven to get your team to the playoffs and win some playoff games. Getting his services while getting another team's two first round picks would be a pretty good scenario if we HAD to give up Cousins.

Other than that, I don't think I would want any of the other guys on that list.
