I'd love to know the real inside scoop on the Dan deal. Like did he want RG3's babies so bad he just hates on Kirk? I mean the team is obviously on the upswing and a LOT is due to Cousins. I don't get it.

Do you mean a QB who got the non-exclusive franchise tag? Like Matt Cassell in 2009 or Kirk Cousins last year?

i like it, use it again if need be. welcome back smooty!

We may never know. I have speculated about it lots, and it is my belief that Cousins and specifically his success here is a constant reminder to Dan about his horrible failure with the RG3 deal.

Shanahan drafted Cousins for a reason, to have as a backup plan incase RG3 didn't work out. If you believe what Shanahan says, he had some doubt from day one. If Shanahan had stayed, he would have installed Cousins as his starter, no question.

At the end of the day, Dan's ego certainly over-rides everything else. Make no mistakes about it, he will absolutely send Cousins packing if he feels he has to in order to stay "in the right" in his mind. And in Dan's mind he will draft the next superstar QB, and get the #1 jersey sales, merchandise, etc... That's all it's ever been about with him. He wants to win, sure, as long as winning goes along with him reaching his other goals.

At this point we don't know what Snyder thinks. It's really all speculation cause he never ever talks to the media.

Listen to the John Keim interview here with Steve Czaban. He touches on my earlier point about the use of the franchise tag and how thats a poor option for the Skins if they want to get a long term deal done

No, my point is when a truly elite qb like a Manning or Brees has their contract about to expire, they get exclusive franchise tags. I assume Kirk will get a non-exclusive tag just because that's what they did last year. If they don't even want to entertain offers he will get the exclusive tag though.

OK. That I agree with. Either way I think he gets tagged. Is it the smartest move to make on Cousins? I dunno? There is some doubt with Cousins, but there's also doubt with anybody not named Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, or Drew Brees. Cousins is a good enough quarterback. Mark Rypien was never elite, nor did I ever really think of him as a franchise quarterback, yet he had that one masterful year that ended in a Super Bowl victory and him as Super Bowl MVP. Right now, we Redskins fans would most certainly welcome at least ONE Super Bowl winning year.

With the history of this franchise since the 80's, we've won Super Bowls based on a well-rounded team, not just a super star quarterback. In fact, I don't really believe we have ever had an elite quarterback since the 70's, so winning Super Bowls with a good quarterback (but not great) is OK with me so as long as we get there.

18 days to go. I really expect a deal done by the 26th. But if its a sweetheart of a deal they ought to wrap it up next Tuesday.

Is it the smartest move? When the probable alternative is every qb since Rypien not named Brad Johnson yes it is IMO. Maybe if we had Phillip Rivers waiting in the wings I'd let him walk.

Here's your options if you're the FO:

A. Resign Kirk, AAV around 25 mil a year probably, still have plenty of room to improve the team elsewhere.
B. Start career backup Colt McCoy, or that long term project car rebuild named Nate Sudfeld and pray he's the next Brady.
C. Draft a qb. out of this weak draft class, potentially moving up to get the one you want or settling for a weak option you feel that you have no choice but to get because you don't want to waste a season with a hole at qb. Either way, most likely you are wasting the next 2+ seasons as he learns how difficult it is being a qb in the modern NFL.
D. Trade for or sign another qb. Note that most available qb's already in the NFL are being discarded by their current teams because they aren't good enough for one reason or another.

Like I said before, if there was some sort of trade with Phillip Rivers, I would consider that. I know we'd only have Rivers for a few seasons, but he's a proven franchise quarterback who (I believe) doesn't want to play in LA. Other than that, I really hate the idea of starting Colt McCoy or Nate S. Colt is a solid backup, but I don't believe is starting material. Either way, we'd see Nate in there before the season is over with.

Either the front office is playing this so genius that none of us can see it, or they're going to wind up playing it stupidly. I'd like to think we're past the Vinny Cerrato days and that the 'skins are merely waiting until closer to the deadline to cry uncle and give Cousins what he wants.
