Here's what my untrained eyes are seeing...

Looking purely at how some of the top d-linemen played in big games this year, I was a little underwhelmed. I want DL more than anyone, but I don't want us to waste a #17 pick either.

Myles Garrett (T A&M) against Alabama/LSU - not impressed
Caleb Brantley (Fla) against Alabama - non-factor
Derek Barnett (Tenn)- against Alabama - non-factor
Chris Wormly (Mich) - against Fla State - pedestrian
Montravious Adams (Aub) - against Alabama & Clemson - some flashes, some plays off

The guys I really liked so far - guys with high motors & forced an impact
Jonathan Allen (Ala)
Soloman Thomas (Stan)
Taco Charlton (Mich)
Malik McDowell (Mich St)

I think Allen will be long gone by the time we pick. Charlton is my fav. He was so disruptive in the games I saw. Like you said, real high motor, quick first step, he has a burst and that's what's we're sorely missing. He'd be my pick at 17, if he's still there.

assuming you are right about Charlton and he is the pick, where does he play ? They have Kerrigan, Smith, Murphy, and maybe Galette .

Excellent answer, Thomas had 1 sack, several hurries, and 9 tackles in his bowl game. Before the game it appeared he would be available at # 17. It looks like a decent D line class, so a good one should be available.

The mock drafts are all over the place. And the combine has a big impact on picks, so it is still early.

Also will the new coach play a 4-3 ? Are they looking to replace Baker, or play next to him ? or a DE to replace Smith ?

Here is a good list;

They better decide on whether or not the 3-4 stays soon. If it is kept, you will need a couple LBs to be acquired in the offseason along with a bona fide NT, along with the obvious DTs that should be the top priority. IF they go to the 4-3 Kerrigan can go back being a DE and possibly become a real beast again. Draft any defensive line stud there is!!!!! We will have a nice unit if a couple seasons. I just hope Kirk doesn't get too greedy and lets us just give him a longer deal so we can keep a decent amount of cap space to get a solid team setup for a change.

Manusky already said he's sticking with the 3-4. He wants a big NT, but didn't say they had to draft one. I'm not sure there is a current stud NT out there, but with Tomsula on board, he may be able to coach some guy up.

Either way, we can always find room for a stud DE (Chris Baker needs re-signed), so we actually still need 2 DE's right now. Trent Murphy may be asked to move to DE again this year, but Galette is no guarantee to return either.

Going to a 3-4 is a big mistake. They have no NT and no natural OLBs..... Kerrigan, Smith, and Murphy are not good OLBs. And to small as 3-4 DT/DEs. What are they going to do, play 5 LBs with two down lineman in passing situations ?

Hopefully this is a smokescreen by Manusky and they plan to play a 4-3, like they did a significant amount last year.

Yeah, it's both (3-4 & 4-3) -similar to last year....you can listen for yourself:

I'm a strong believer in best player available. The coaches will have to figure that one out.
