FrenchSkin 12-17-2016, 11:01 AM We said that with Haslett.
I can't wait to improve the talent on D first and foremost.
Agreed.
The only thing I don't like from Barry is that I feel like he's not bringing his guys to play hungry, hard, the energy seems to be low on that side of the ball.
Other than that I'm not mad at his playcalling, he's doing a decent job considering the level of talent at his disposal.
As bad as they look this defense is pretty good in some areas, including sacks number.
And that's good for this week: carolina's right tackle is weak, last week he got humiliated on several plays by the chargers.

Cooley was on the radio earlier this week talking about how guys are consistently confused, out of position and missing assignments.
He suggests/implies that Barry may be putting more checks and contingencies on his players than they can digest. This has two negative effects. 1. missed assignments. 2. slow play because of thinking
Cooley says his favorite philosophy is to put as much on the players as they can handle e.g. Wade Phillips in the playoffs last year. No two looks were the same against the Pats.
We don't do anything well. He says pick something and play it well rather than playing 4 things poorly.

He's got a solid point (he knows a thing or two about football, doesn't he? ^^), we've seen too many hugely blown coverage for it to be 100% on the players.
I'm wondering out loud ("out writing"?): with our level of talent, how likely it is that opp off coord quickly find a way to expose the defense if they only have a few plays in their book?

I strongly disagree with your contention that the the effort of the defensive players is unsatisfactory. My observation is that the defensive players do play hard. They don't always play well and we certainly need better, faster players on defense but I don't question the effort.
As for Joe Barry, the problem with Barry is not that he is isn't a capable DC. The problem is that he is not an outstanding DC. If we're going to get to the next level as a team, we'll need outstanding coordinators on both sides of the ball.
I haven't seen effort or energy as an issue either. That falls mainly on the players anyway. If you can't get up for playing football you just don't belong here.

Tis true.. I just wish we had a more inside, in depth look at play calling, esp on 3rd down, to see how the talent we do have, is being used. I also think Breeland needs to wake up i dont know if he's unmotivated or still pissing and moaning over the Norman signing or what, but, its.not uncommon to have the sophomore slump so let's hope it's a small issue... Other D issues... No pass rush 85% of the time, nothing up the middle usually, qbs are hardly ever contained and break easy runs for 1st downs (this is where scheme and play calling gets looked at most IMO) ... oh yea, NO PASS rush or pressure most 3rd downs that I recall.... so i mean. Switching to a more aggressive coordinator could help if we yes, improve some speed and the line on D
SFREDSKIN 12-17-2016, 01:50 PM Everyone blames Barry for the defensive struggles, he's surrounded by a pretty good defensive staff, including 2 former solid DC"s (Fewell and Manusky). You guys don't think he listens to their input? We lack 1 solid DL, S, ILB, pass rusher and we'll be fine. If they fire Barry, we got either Fewell or Manusky to take over.

Maybe I'm wrong. This is more of a feeling than an analyzed statement.
I really don't know what stat could give us and idea of how good our pursuit is. For me that's an aspect where talent isn't a factor, just pure motivation to give your best effort on every play.
But maybe part of what I perceive AT TIMES like a little lack of motivation is on, as said by DYoungJelly, Barry asking too much of his players and them hesitating... Hard to tell.

Exactly, Barry doesn't have much to work with to begin with. Only half our unit is starter worthy. I am in the give Barry one more year camp, but if they did ditch him I wouldn't cry about it.

Interesting comment. That is why I think some of us in here are for giving Barry another year, maybe even two to get some bona fide starters in here, especially on the line and at both LB, CB, and S positions. The overall quality of the unit is below average. Barry just doesn't have the horses to get the job done. Still, you have to adapt to what you have to work with and make changes to your schemes to maximize the unit's effectiveness. Thus, Barry definitely has to shoulder a lot of the blame for the current state of the defense.
