I'll touch on some things and then you guys can take it from there.

Plus

- Colt McCoy played well. I'm very comfortable with him as the backup QB.
- Offensive Line picked it up in this game.
- Spaight is the real deal. He's just going to keep getting better. Good on ST, too.
- Preston Smith is quicker and faster. I think he's going to dominate this season.
- Rookie CB Kendall Fuller can really play. He's smooth as silk.

Minus

- Injury to RB Matt Jones. We need to trade for a RB or sign a street FA .
- Tepid play of backup RB's dictates the above move.
- Our SS group is nothing to brag about. Move Cravens to SS now!
- Kory can't move anybody in run game. Time to go with Long at starting C.

Pretty much agree with everything here.
Losing Morris makes the Jones injury hurt 5 times as much, what were they thinking!!
Jones got hurt in college, was hurt last yr,why would you go into the season without a backup or not even make an offer to Morris?
We all know how humble Morris is and what a hard worker he is,we should have known after last yr he would be motivated as hell to come back strong SMH

Never agreed with the phasing out of Alfmo and subsequent move not to bring him back. Always considered him a better back then Jones.

But, I wouldn't advocate a reaction trade for a RB either or signing some old FA RB. There are always RBs available via practice squad with potential.

Imho the run game will always play second fiddle to the pass game with Jay, and I dont anticipate a paradigm shift that will result in a stout run game regardless of the RB. Unless we draft or sign a stud RB.

Jay will play to his strength the passing game and I believe any offense should aim to follow the HC'S vision.

Agreed.

If Jay would just want to run the ball effectively:

1 the O line wouldn't get blown off the line,
2 the TEs would hold their blocks, and
3 the RBs would start making the correct reads

So we have a better OL, improved TE blocking, and supposedly improved RB but they all suck and that's why don't run the ball better.

Lol, we can play this game all day or we can actually talk football.

Cheers ;)

So we rushed for 101 yards on 31 carries against a team and defensive system that was top 5 against the run last year.....what? Did folks watch the game the other night?

We stopped them 9 rushes for 35 yards.

I saw our first team Oline blocking the fuck out of the jets...

Our starting defense looks awesome. Good sign. We'll get a huge test week 1 with Big Ben and Brown.

If Jones is out going into the regular season they'll bring Pierre Thomas in. I'm more concerned about the run blocking at this point than the guys running it. I don't feel too confident about our LG/C combination. I think next year we'll have new starters at both those positions that aren't on the team this year. Whether for cap or performance reasons, I don't see a lot our current guys back next year there.

Just can't get that excited about pre season. I would take that with a grain of salt.

Well it was a decent test. I think the main reason gruden ran so much was to put things on tape to see which backs are running well and is this combo of Lauvao and Long playing along side at guard-center part of the answer. So grain of salt with outcome, but coaching staff is serious about improving the running game...running 31 times is decent total for a preseason game. I like what I saw overall...of course the injury was terrible.

Maybe. They are on paper but that doesn't mean anything.

Before Jones was hurt, that's the first time all units have been clicking in the run game since the Rams game last year.

We remained committed to the run last year even when we shouldn't:

2015 NFL Team Rushing Stats - National Football League - ESPN (http://www.espn.com/nfl/statistics/team/_/stat/rushing/sort/rushingAttempts)

We ran the ball 44% of all plays.

That's with a bad defense and playing from behind.

Our downfield big yardage plays are based off play action and we are good at it:

FOOTBALL OUTSIDERS: Innovative Statistics, Intelligent Analysis | 2015 Play-Action Offense (http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stat-analysis/2016/2015-play-action-offense)

Can't do that without the run.

Speaking in general assertions that Jay is a passing coach and that's what makes the team bad on the running plays is a cop out and it's easier to fit into a narrative.

On individual running plays, all can look at the film and see where it broke down:

1. QB should have checked out
2. OLine missed a block or got bull dozed
3. TE didn't hold a block
4. RB stutter stepped or missed a read.

For example, the first running play against Atlanta, Niles lost his block and Long was blown up when the defender got his hands inside. Maybe they didn't understand how much Jay really wanted them to not screw that play up.

Blaming philosophy, an obtuse ideal you can't point to on film, rather than execution, both play calling and play, is the same vague line you were pushing from last year.

THIS TEAM IS SERIOUS ABOUT RUNNING THE FOOTBALL EFFECTIVELY.

Welcome back it's been a long summer.

Audio Vault | ESPN 980 (http://www.espn980.com/audio-vault/)

Cooley's show 8-19-16 Hour 2, about a third of the way through, Cooley elaborates on the run scheme.

He says the Oline is blocking differently than when Kyle Shanahan was here and that the new blocking technique is Bill Callahan's.

Goes into several other run game related topics.
