People need to read the Jones link a little more carefully. He's offering up his opinion. Take from it what you will.
You mean like part of the article?

"For right now, Kirk has not done enough to show what you need to see to give that guy $50 million guaranteed," he said. "He's playing like an $18 million quarterback right now."

"Is that your opinion, or have you talked to people in the organization?" Jason Bishop asked.

"That's my educated opinion," Jones responded

My personal opinion has always been that it is Dan who is not the Cousins fan. To me, Bruce has always struck me as just a more rational extension of Dan, meaning that he does what the owner wants but tries to go about it as smartly and rational as possible. I have stated in the past that I feel his disdain towards Cousins is due more to the fact that "his" pick of QB (RG3) failed spectacularly in the NFL, and less to do with Kirk himself. This will be one of the main reasons IMO that Cousins will not be retained.

As far as who the source might be, my best guess is that it is a player, and not an actual team official. Let's try and remember who has been the most anti-Kirk player wise? DeSean Jackson is kind of the only one who springs to my mind. He knows he wont be here next year, so it could be him leaking to the media...just speculation...

I maybe naive, but I do not think it's Dan. Dan does not speak to the media and Mike Jones is a beat reporter. He does not have access to Dan. Tony Wiley would never let a beat reporter close to the owner.

If this report came from someone at ESPN, like Tony C or Wilbon, maybe I could see them having access to Dan.

Maybe Bruce or Scot M, but i don't see them doing it. It is the bye week, it could be a made up story to get clicks on the url.

Kirk is middle of the pack as far as ESPN's QBR goes, 14th currently.

He is 7th in DYAR (overall value) and 9th in DVOA (value per play) over at FO:

Here we go again......does anybody really want to save a few million and sink back into the wonderful world of stop gap qb's for 10 years? The guy is fresh off of one of his better games and this shit appears like a fart that has been trapped under the covers all night. Wtf.
We are in a position not only to lock up a top 10 qb in KC (and that will be completely clear by years end), but also to draft a full compliment of players (still a relatively new thing in DC), and have enough cap space to pay our own and maybe add a piece or two to the puzzle. To keep a TEAM together with its coaching staff. Instead lets let him walk, and fuck it all up. Brilliant. This team is right on the cusp of being a true contender. Let it grow!

Talking with SS though, he believes they are still unsure of paying him.

Let's throw some more fuel on this fire...lol

Some key points I agree on:

And all of this means . . . what? The numbers look heavy, but for half a season, they have felt flimsy. Washington is just a middle-of-the-pack scoring team. Cousins still makes too many mistakes and squanders too many opportunities.

I also think this is a valid point. Not necessarily that scoring is all on Cousins, but he's left little to desire in red zone efficiency this year.

This is how you build the case that Cousins is an empty stat collector. This is how you figure he is the creation of Gruden and an offensive staff that runs one of the most clever systems in the NFL. This is how you look at Washington’s poor red-zone performance this season and conclude that the quarterback doesn’t do enough when the passing windows are tighter and daring decision-making and moxie factor into performance.

Cousins has not looked flimsy for half the year. That is just false.
It is 90% play calling that is killing us in the red zone.

I don't think they said that Cousins looked flimsy for half the year. Here is the actual quote

In other words, we have a lot of yardage, but they don't equate to points.

Yup. Our entire issue on offense is rz. I say that is way more on coaches than any player.

I would probably agree that KC doesn't take enough chances or isn't aggressive enough. There's probably some truth to that. I think in his first few years when he was spot starting, he had more gunslinger in him. But after all the interceptions and getting benched because of them, he plays a lot more conservative.

Let's think about this logically though. What free agent quarterback would be available next year that is an upgrade from Cousins? I see absolutely nobody. Unless Bill Belichick did the unthinkable and decided to trade an aging Tom Brady (who doesn't appear to be aging by the way), who would the 'skins get? Would you see Dallas trading Romo to Washington? I doubt it. Sanchez to Washington? He couldn't beat out the no-name guy in Denver.

I'm sorry, but you don't have to have an Aaron Rodgers or a Tom Brady to win Super Bowls. Yes, having those guys makes it a heck of a lot easier to win it all, but look at the teams that have won the Super Bowl with less than spectacular quarterbacks. Heck, I don't think Eli Manning is an elite QB and he's won two Super Bowls.

Maybe it's a homer thing to say, but I think Cousins is as good as we can get right now. I think you stick with him for a few more years.
