JoeRedskin 01-07-2016, 09:48 AM So looking at the cap sheets, here is another part of the equation. We have some important FA's of our own that need to be addressed. Looking at the cap sheets here are the guys who become UFA's this year (not including RGIII b/c pretty sure he is not being resigned):
Cousins
W. Compton
M. Foster
K. Robinson
T. Knighton
C. Thompson
D. Young
L. Paulsen
Of these, who do we let walk, who do we try to reup?
I think Cousins and Compton are no-brainers and we shouldn't jerk them around. These are the priority resignings.
While others may disagree, I think Knighton is close to a priority - he brings a lot to the table (both figuratively and literally). We should make every reasonable effort to resign him.
Foster is another "make every reasonable effort" resigning.
Other than those, the only ones out of the rest that I really make an effort for is Thompson and Young. However, they may not even make a move for Young given how little they use him.
Paulson and LeRib are eminently replaceable guys who need to make vet min deals to stick around.
Robinson is tricky, given his benching, they will probably just let him walk as both Compton and Foster are UFA's and Riley could become a cap casualty, he may benefit being in the right place at the right time for a position that is in flux. A lot depends on how the ILB UFA market shakes out.

Isn't Compton an RFA? If so, that's good for the Skins.

Agree with this. And to add, I think the reason Pot Roast is...A) extremely limited market at NT B) Performance...solid
And ILB is very interesting...
I think Foster is a decent piece, but I would look to upgrade or draft there. Spaight on IR, rookie from last year should be in the mix. Robinson could be retained to back up Compton...Compton has proven to be a decent starter and it wont take a huge contract to lock him up. Riley is gone period.
Irrefutable 01-07-2016, 01:02 PM Dream on! All Cousins needs to do is say "no" to any Skins contract offer and they'll be forced to franchise him at $19.5MM. I'm pretty sure that Kirk and his agent can do arithmetic.
Isn't time for all of us to realize that Kirk is in the driver's seat in contract negotiations? Simply put, we can't do without him. He is now the most valuable player on the team. Kirk and his agent know that and he's going to get paid.
I like Kirk, however he has had 1 good year. At this time last year all the "experts" here wanted to trade him or make him 3rd string. The Redskins have been burned on lots of big contracts... it would be wise to explore the market before committing to a big long term. And the key will be the structure of the contract- bonus money and length.

Our contract guys have been great at writing mutually beneficial contracts. I think KC would like to stay here, and the Skins certainly want him too. I will truly be shocked if a) we franchise him, or b) the contract has crazy numbers in it.
RobH4413 01-07-2016, 02:36 PM What is Cousin's cap hit if we franchise him? Does all of the ~ $19 mil convert to CAP money?
The reason I ask, because I have always heard the rule of thumb with effectively knowing who a QB is, is 40 Starts. Cousins is about at 25 starts now, meaning another full season would bring him to that magic number 40.
Would it not make sense to consider the franchise tag as an insurance policy. If you are already giving him a 3 year deal worth 16-17/mil yr... why not just tag him to get some more information and and give the long term deal after that season?
Yes you are paying several million more in the first year, but you are also essentially buying quarterback insurance.

Once the tag is placed the whole amount counts as guaranteed and against the cap.
Most players reportedly hate the franchise tag, so you could be setting up a hard feelings negotiation where after the tags are done he wants to go somewhere else. My guess is that if we tag him, it would need to be done in the context of trying to get a long term deal done.

Kirk would get over his feelings being hurt (if we tagged him), being that we are the team that drafted him, started him, and paid him $19 million.
Would the cap implications just completely remove that off the table? Seems to me we would be okay, and that it's a viable, if not likely, option.

Kirk likely will have several suitors, and if we say, nope, you are our property so we are franchising you, he very well may decide to leave.
Still, if the team franchises him, we would have the space, probably would limit some options. The difference in cap numbers between a well structured 18-20 million 5-6 year contract and a franchise tag value of 19 million is probably about 6 million cap dollars so it would still be in the team's interest to get a reasonable long term contract done
Schneed10 01-07-2016, 04:37 PM I definitely don't see this negotiation getting to a hardball stage. I think Kirk loves McVay in particular, and the QB coach and Gruden and his teammates too. I think he will have a strong interest in being here, I don't see the negotiation being painful.
I also think McCloughan will see Cousins' work ethic and level of preparation and know that's the kind of guy he wants to set the tone for the team. He won't lowball him.
They'll come to a deal commensurate with starting QB market value. Anybody thinking we'll get him for $10M per season needs to stop dreaming, McCloughan won't even do that in an opening conversation. And anybody thinking Kirk will have any interest in going somewhere else needs to chill. He'll be here and he'll get a fair deal.
