Gruden/Redskins Doing Alfred Morris Dirty

Morris’ competition for snaps is more with Matt Jones, who saw 26 snaps, compared to Morris’ 12. It was especially telling that Morris was never on the field for more than two consecutive plays, while there were six times where Jones had three or more consecutive snaps.

Through three games, Morris has graded out better than Jones by a small amount, in large part because of Jones’ two fumbles. Had it not been for those mishaps, Jones would have a slight lead in the grades.

It’s very likely that Morris and Jones will continue to split time, without one ever taking the full role; the reason being that they excel in different areas. Morris is great at running between the tackles, where he has 5.2 yards per carry. When Morris has tried running outside of the tackles, his average drops to 2.9.

Jones is the opposite, with 7.1 yards per carry outside the tackles, and 3.0 between them. If these splits continue, it makes a lot of sense to utilize the strengths of both backs. If that’s the case, and Washington is losing more, than their winning, Morris will continue to see less than one-fourth of the team’s snaps.

On one hand, it’s disappointing that we may never see Morris play as well as he once did. On the other hand, these two players can become something Washington can build around. With better run-blocking, the team can be more successful early in games, which means they can also run more late in games. Morris and Jones have the potential to be a great one-two punch, if the players around them step up.

Alfred Morris is one of the only consistent bright spots on this team drafted in 2012, a fan favorite, humble hard worker and great teammate. He's never missed a game since being drafted and has put up some very good stats behind below average offensive lines and limited talent surrounding him:

2012 - 1613 rushing yards 13 tds

2013 - 1275 rushing yards 7 tds

2014- 1074 rushing yards 8 tds

Week 1 against Miami, he rushed for 121 yards. Very likeabale down to earth guy who has his head on straight.

The Redskins still have not paid Morris his worth as he's still playing on his rookie deal.

What really pissed me off is last night, Gruden had Morris coming off the bench behind Matt Jones, a rookie who had 1 good game against the Rams and who has fumbled in both games. Is this how you show appreciation for a guy who has been carrying this team the past three years without a complaint, has given his heart and soul to this team, 6 carries coming off the bench behind a rookie who has not proved anything? And knowing this is a contract year where he's due to get paid? Would the Seahawks do this to Lynch? The Vikings to Peterson?

I think Morris deserves better and the Redskins may be pissing off one of the only good homegrown guys we have. C'mon, do right by him. The players who get busted for pot and other legal issues (Trent) get taken care of no matter what. Do right by Alfred. Play him and pay him.

Agree 100% with my heart. Logic and common sense, however are totally different under the current CBA.

Running back is a position in the current NFL that a team shouldn't invest a lot of money or sign a long term contract.

These guys are going through an interstate caliber car crash every Sunday for 16 weeks and simply won't last as long as players at other positions.

I would really like to see running backs treated differently in the next CBA.

Unfortunately, as mentioned by other posters in this thread, the smart thing is to trade him when he is a peak value for picks.

I love Alfred Morris as a player and as a locker room guy. But.. RB's drop off fast. I'd have a hard time committing to him long term if the price was much more. He has taken a beating and has lost a step. I want him on the roster and I'd love to see him retire as a Redskin but paying him big money does nothing but limit the team. Give him a frontloaded 6 year contract with some of the cap space we have left in 2015 and let him stay a Redskin but I don't see him as a 1500 yard back anymore.

I'd trade Morris. I don't want him back on this team next year. For who? For what?

I think he looks about the same as he usually does. He's not going to be a 1500 yard back when he's splitting handoffs, but he definitely hasn't hit the apex of his career! Morris isn't a burner, he's a power running back. Think Frank Gore (in his prime). If you put him and Jones out there, Jones will outrun him every time. If you tell Morris to bounce outside without adequate blocking, he's most likely going to get caught in the backfield or with minimal yards. If you tell Morris run north-south through this tiny hole, he'll most likely knock dudes on their butt and carry 2 guys on his back for 5-6 yards.

Morris has only been in the league 4 years, he definitely has at least 2-3 more good years in him, before going on the downslope, barring any sort of major injuries.

I just feel like as long as he's on the team, he should be getting carries because it's not like he's incapable or doing a worse job than Jones. I feel an allegiance to Morris cuz he's always been a team player workhorse. But if we're moving away from a north-south ground and pound to a more east-west power toss here and there kind of running team, Jones is just more cut out for that.

He's not going to be here after this season anyways so why not get something in return for him? It should be obvious to anybody watching that Jones talent far exceeds that of Morris in both the running and passing game. It would be different if Morris had time left on his contract, but this is his final year and we aren't going to re-sign him.
