Bye Bye Barry Cofield, I always liked him and felt he was misused by Haz, but he is too expensive now.

^^^ updated cap sheet

The NFL has stated that next year's cap will be about $140M. The NFL Player's union thinks it will be higher, but let's go with the $140M for now.

Cap: $140M
2015 Redskins Cap Total: $123.7M
Current Room: $16.7M

Expected Cuts (what I'd expect to happen):
Bowen $5.5M
Chester $4.0M
Porter $2.8M
Paulsen $1.8M
4 Players Replacing at Min Salary: ($2.0M)
Total Cut Impact: $12.1M

Expected room after cuts: $28.8M, and that's probably conservative.

Plenty of room to fill holes, but amazingly probably not enough to fill ALL the holes. We just have so many, sadly.

Still, you can create more space by extending Trent Williams who is going into the final year of his contract in 2015. Could do something with Garcon, too.

I just don't want to see a bunch of junk investments. $4M for Lauvao and crap like that doesn't do it for me. Have to pay for safeties.

^^ post from Schneed back in Dec with projected cap cuts.

I think we are in a healthy cap space. We have room to do some things or play it safe and not commit a lot of future cap.

I was listening to ravens radio and they have a good bit of cap problems. glad we have room.

Good to see some housecleaning of the older, higher paid guys.

I didn't even account for Cofield, he represents a big savings. Assuming Bowen Chester and Porter all hit the road - I'd be surprised if they didn't, McCloughan will have a lot of cap space to work with.

Unless he's imagining Baker as the NT, this could be a hat tip to Danny Shelton at #5?

Hearing the door is not shut on a return on Cofield for a much lower deal

No way, he was a very effective player with a specialty of penetrating when healthy. He's perfect as a DE in a one-gap, when healthy.

He's not the ideal size for a NT, and he's older and coming off an injury year, so do you count on him as a starter? No.

But at a much lower salary, assuming he can't find a deal elsewhere, is a very smart move. He could be a very good rotation guy in Barry's one-gap.

I agree, if he can get healthy he's worth another look at a much lower rate.

2 or so years ago he was good, ranked really high for nose tackles.

but if he cant stay healthy, he cant contribute.

i like coefiled more than bowen or jenkins or baker. Im not a fan of baker bc i think he skips his assignment on any given play and tries to penetrate and get some TV time and do his swaggy dance. too much interest in self promotion vs doing his job. as a DT/NT, you need to eat blockers.

i guess with a new DC maybe he will want baker to penetrate and not eat blockers like haz wanted him to do.
