skinsfaninok 01-20-2015, 07:32 PM U need the talent at the end of they day and we don't have it on defense yet. DYoungJelly 01-20-2015, 07:49 PM I dont give it anything because we havent played a down yet. Ditto. DYoungJelly 01-20-2015, 07:58 PM Russell was just on the Drive on ESPN 980. He said that a very important voice in the organization explained they felt Fangio's success was in large part due to the outstanding talent he had and that they felt Barry got more with less. Does anyone know: 1. Who the "voice" is and 2. If this led to Barry being hired or if this is spin after Fangio turned us down? MTK 01-20-2015, 08:04 PM I'd guess the voice is McCloughan. There's no way they didn't consult with him on this hire. Skins1570 01-20-2015, 08:27 PM This defense is still going to struggle next year, regardless of who coaches it. Yeah it probably was going to be bad even if Vic Fangio had come here. MTK 01-20-2015, 08:50 PM Look at Fangio's D rankings prior to SF. Vic Fangio Record, Statistics, and Category Ranks | Pro-Football-Reference.com (http://www.pro-football-reference.com/coaches/FangVi0.htm) JoeRedskin 01-20-2015, 09:03 PM Hmmm. W/out elite talent, he is pretty average. Shock. Sent from my VS985 4G using Tapatalk SirLK26 01-20-2015, 09:15 PM It's important to note that he was the first defensive coordinator for two expansion teams in Houston and Carolina. Regardless, Phillips was clearly the best choice, even over Fangio. Spare me the "he's too old" or "too soft" baloney. Players clearly respond to him, and his defenses don't appear to have been much less successful the older he's gotten. I'd feel better about our current front office if I knew SmootSmack's suspicion that Phillips wasn't as interested in coming here as has been reported was true, because passing over one of the most successful defensive coaches in the history of the league for a guy that orchestrated back-to-back defenses ranked league-worst in both yards and points is mind-boggling. Yeah, he may not have had much talent in Detroit, but if he's really a better option than Wade or Fangio you'd think he'd at least finish, I dunno, in the top 25 in either category just once? Maybe? For a start? But hey, we got a young guy with "energy" that "wants to prove himself" and has "grown" since his epic failure in Detroit. Yay! And anyway, who am I to think I know better than our front office? Because clearly, they've done an excellent job in their hires up to this point. Let's all pretend like we don't know how this ends. That felt great. :D mbedner3420 01-20-2015, 09:44 PM I wouldn't say the talent level with the bears is that much better - if at all. I wonder of it was for more job security than anything else. diehardskin2982 01-20-2015, 09:45 PM At the end of the day if Joe Barry can motivate these players, utilize the talents that each player has, put them in the right position to excel and hold them accountable then I am cool with the hire. They tried for Vic and lost. |
