Dan Snyder and Vinny Cerratto would have hired Wade Phillips.

I wanted an experienced DC who also had NFL HC experience (Phillips, Schwartz, or Mangini, for example) so Jay Gruden could have a mentor on staff, as well. I think that Jay made a lot of rookie HC mistakes last season and he could still use some sage advice from time-to-time.

So do this mean we are going to be a Tampa 2 4-3? I can dig it

I admit not knowing much about the guy until his name first popped up. Detroit was a disaster, not sure how much blame you can attach to anyone there at that time not named Millen.

Yup. It's not like they had a DL anchored by Suh and his buddies.

From Pro Football Reference here are the guys from Detroit's 0-16 squad:

Paris Lenon, Age: 31, Pos: MLB, Games: 16, Sacks: 1.5, Int.: 0, Tackles/Assists: 81/40.

Ernie Sims, Age: 24, Pos: RLB, Games: 16, Sacks: 1.0, Int.: 0, Tackles/Assists: 71/42.

Daniel Bullocks, Age: 25, Pos: SS, Games: 16, Sacks: 0, Int.: 0, Tackles/Assists: 60/30.

Kalvin Pearson, Age: 30, Pos: FS, Games: 16, Sacks: 1, Int.: 0, Tackles/Assists: 65/18.

Leigh Bodden, Age: 27, Pos: RCB, Games: 16, Sacks: 0, Int.: 0, Tackles/Assists: 61/12.

Ryan Nece, Age: 27, Pos: LLB, Games: 16, Sacks: 1.5, Int.: 1, Tackles/Assists: 45/23.

So three of your top six tacklers are DB's. Not a ringing endorsement of the talent level. The rest of the leaders on defense:

Dwight Smith: 33, SS
Dewayne White: 29, RDE, T/A: 28/10
Alex Lewis: 27, LB, 32/9
Cory Redding: 28, RDT, 31/7
Travis Fisher: 29, RCB, 30/7
Shaun Cody: 25, RDT, 25/11
Corey Smith: 29, DE, 25/5
Chartric Darby: 33, NT, 23/9
Jared DeVries: 32, LDE, 21/8
Brian Kelly: 32, LCB, 23/392
Cliff Avril: 22, DE, 17/5

Other than Avril (in his rookie year) and Sims, I hadn't heard of any of these guys. Seven years from now, others will probably say the same for most of our 2013-14 defense.

Yup. This was another big reason I wanted Phillips.

I have a feeling that they are feeling the hire out. Just like they worked Fassel. Feeding the reaction of the fanbase. Since the hire isn't official yet.

Redskins fan logic:

Wade Phillip interview: HELL NO, he's soft, too much of a nice guy!. His son is coaching with the team!. This is another good ol' boy hire! We need new blood!! Blah blah blah!!

Raheem Morris interview: F*CK NO!! His secondary sucked!!! He didn't develop anyone!!! This is another Bruce Allen hire!!!

Joe Barry hire: WTF??!!! His defense in Detroit 8 years ago sucked!! This is another Bruce Allen hire!!! Why are we the only team that hires people that are known to the team FO??!!! WE'RE DOOOOMMMEEEEDDDD!!!

Well, wasn't Snyder a power-hungry asshole, despite the fanbase being told otherwise, from 1999 till 2004? And even then...

Joe Gibbs was a master at this. You could see it during his four seasons, how he massaged Snyder and Vinny Cerrato’s egos during news conferences, etc. Made them feel like they were giving invaluable input all the time. Gibbs also knew when to let Snyder “win;” in other words, he knew when to pick his battles. Gibbs also knew Snyder idolized him. Who didn't?
As one person from that staff once said, “That way, when it came time to pick his fights with Dan, he’d get what he wanted. He managed Dan well.” (http://espn.go.com/blog/washington-redskins/post/_/id/4651/quick-takes-coaching-under-snyder)

2008-2009, Snyder gave control to his good friend below, right?

Thanks Snyder!

I dunno what to believe about Snyder vs. Shanahan. But Shanahan didn't have that kind of trouble in Denver, right? Was the situation in Oakland Shanny's fault or Al Davis (who had trouble with other coaches)? OTOH, we have had continuous drama with the Snyder Skins except Gibbs 2.0.

It seems like a mixed bag to me, but isn't it logical to assume Snyder is still a power hungry asshole until proven otherwise?

That bit about Gibbs is important.

People are creating a false either/or between giving Snyder total power or no power.

As Gibbs shows us, the important thing is actually to find a workable middle ground.

Gibbs found the middle ground. Other good teams find the middle ground.

As we have seen with bad trades, controversies about starting QB's, and many other things, Bruce Allen does not find the middle ground.
